Don't trust the critics
‘Tarzan’ Hits Box-Office Success As Critics Gone Wrong
Whenever you feel that an ancient childhood jungle story book can never make, it always tend to happen in the generation today. Unlike the past attempt of reliving a classical story like the Lone Ranger, in which modern-day viewers do not seem to remember, the new Tarzan installment seemed to go the other way around, and unexpectedly surpassed many expectations that even analysts went wrong.
The classic Edgar Rice Burroughs’ creation hits this week’s theaters with an unexpected $19.3 million sales in 12 international markets in about 6,900 screens worldwide.
Legend of Tarzan Margot Robbie Alexander Skarsgard
The David Yates take in the new Tarzan has an opening weekend results sailed to a flabbergasting $38.49 million. Its $3.1 million of earning in Russia, predictably topped Russian box office with 44 percent, making it into their top five all-time best only on par at Snow White And The Huntsman and above Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes for a Disney and Pixar release, according to Deadline.
Likewise in Korea, Tarzan grossed $4 million from 606 screens, and elsewhere in Asia, the film notched first spot in India, Indonesia, and Thailand, while Malaysia shot an overwhelming opening weekend.
In Latin America, Mexico’s release took a lead too, including Puerto Rico. U.K., France, and Australia scored number one amid the on-going Euro Cup soccer tournament.
Moviefone have revealed reasons why it was premature to count Tarzan out, and why the movie’s perceived weaknesses were actually strengths.
First, the character is the star. If the movie looks good enough, viewers do not mind who plays who: in this part, Tarzan. Second, it has a female appeal.
It is fun for all ages. There are a lot more of a nostalgia markets than youth’s for Tarzan. Some 55 percent of the audience was over 35.
Fourth, weak competition, and last but not the least, execution. Few critics seemed to think Yates pulled it off but audiences clearly thought he did.
