Alexander Skarsgard talks ‘Disconnect’ with ScreenSlam…
ScreenSlam: Can you tell us what’s going on with his (your character’s) life? Why is it that he’s all of a sudden spending time on the Internet What’s going on?
Alexander Skarsgard: It’s important to emphasize that it’s not a didactic story. We’re not trying to say that the Internet is bad. It’s not about that. It’s about three different stories but this story, the Derek/Cindy story line, is about a couple who there is so much love there but they’ve lost something.
Derek was a Marine. He’s still a Marine but he’s not in the Corps anymore. He’s back and he’s a paper-pushing grunt. He hates his job. He hates his co-workers. He’s not happy at all. He feels emasculated and he can’t talk about it. He can’t talk to his own wife about it. He used to be a warrior, he used to be a hero and now he’s nothing. I think a lot of people that serve overseas when they come home, they’re struggling with that.
So, it’s tough for him. He doesn’t really want to talk about it but he needs to…but it’s complicated and it’s difficult and it hurts. So, a way, I think for him online poker is just a distraction, it’s just to numb everything just by sitting and clicking, you know? So, Cindy doesn’t really know what to do. She can’t really communicate with…she can’t like talk to her husband, so she goes online to these chatrooms to talk to strangers because she’s got to vent. She’s got to talk to someone about her problem.
SS: Being a former Marine, your character, he decides to take things into his own hands when he thinks he’s found the person who’s stolen their identity. Can you relate to that?
Alex: Absolutely. It’s so clear in that moment that it’s a blessing in disguise for Derek. He’s suddenly alive again. He’s got a mission. He’s finally doing reconnaissance again for the first time since he was in Afghanistan So, when they go on this road trip, he’s really genuinely excited about it. He’s got a purpose in life now and I think Cindy can see that in his eyes. What they’re doing is wrong and its’ scary but it’s also a way for them to kind of connect…And when they’re in that car together, they’re actually seeing each other for the first time.
