Interview Alexander Skarsgård
Title: It was quite exciting, from the first day in bed together naked
“I had sex today. HOLY SHIT!” With these words begins “Diary of a Teenage Girl” with Bel Powley in the main role. Next to her, we see Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård, best known for his role in HBO series True Blood. Alexander came to present his new film at the Ghent Filmfestival and Zap magazine was there.
What did you think was so interesting about the story?
“I came across this project through a friend of mine in LA. He knew Marielle Heller and told me about this film she wanted to make. I read the script the same night and totally fell for the story. I met her a few days later and it was a done deal. The film is based on a comic Marielle translated to film about 8 years ago. She already played Minnie’s role on Broadway, so she was extremely passionate about it. That made me really, really enthusiastic.”
There are a lot of explicit scenes where you and Bel are naked. Wasn’t that embarrassing?
"Not for me, but it wasn’t simple either. Most sexscenes take place in the apartment of my character Monroe. But we only had the apartment for the first three days of our film schedule. Bel had never done any such scenes before, so we had to do the most intense scenes during the first three days. In the beginning she was nervous, but we had a good preparation and we were able to build trust. It was intense, naked in bed together on the first day. It’s a good way to get to know each other.” (laughs)
How is a sex scene like that done?
“The thing is, a sexscene can be embarassing for an actor when you feel that it’s not really necessary to have this scene in the story. Because we were able to prepare the scenes and the story well, we knew exactly why the scenes were important for the story. If you have that trust the scenes are easier to do.”
“The sex scenes also have this sense of reality about them, not always so sexy but natural like in real life.”
As a viewer you have the tendency to sympathise with Monroe, even though his character’s behavior is not always acceptable. How do you play such a complex character?
“That’s exactly what made it interesting, I wanted to discover how I could do that. It’s more fun for the audience as well compared to just playing him as the bad guy- that would make it boring. Those two weeks of preparation were necessary to develop my character and build out the relationship between Monroe and Minnie. That way it isn’t simply a case of an older guy taking advantage of a young girl. The goal of the film was to make it a bit uneasy for the audience. That way you involve the audience in the movie. It’s the best compliment you can get: that the viewers would hate the character but at the same time they could understand him too so it becomes a bit uneasy.”
How did you prepare for the scene where you take LSD?
“There were a few people on the set who had a lot of experience with that, I’m not gonna say who. (laughs) Marielle invited some friends to the set who intensely experienced the seventies in San Francisco. So they could give us good tips.”
The film is about the sexual discoveries of a teenage girl. Mostly this theme is only played out by a male protagonist. The last years brought some changes though. Do you think this film could have been made 10 or 15 years ago?
“Probably not and that is a pity. It is also why I think this film is so unique. It made me sad at the same time. Why are there not more realistic and honest representations of young girls? Not every young girl wants to find the perfect boyfriend right away and get married. They also have the need to discover their sexuality but are often branded as a slut for it. I thought it was good that Minnie is very honest about her needs and that she discovers everything. But at the same time you can see it’s just a phase and her whole life isn’t ruined by it.”
Did you get angry reactions towards the film and your role in it?
“In my opinion it’s not a controversial movie, but I’m not looking at it objectively because I’m totally into the story. When the film was ready, Marielle was scared about what reactions she would get in the US, but all in all it was pretty much okay. We were also afraid that the film would get a high rating so teenage girls wouldn’t be able to go and see it. In the end the film got a good rating in the US and teenagers could go see it. It was Britain that gave the high rating, viewers had to be older than 17. That was kind of surprising, but we’ve had mostly positive reactions.”
The red part in the article: Diary of a Teenage girl is tells the story of 15-year old Minnie who begins an affair with her mother’s boyfriend. The story plays in the seventies, in San Francisco, a period where sexual liberation and the hippie culture thrived. The film is a tragicomical portrait of a teenager who discovers her sexuality and finds out what it means to become an adult. Funny, provocative and moving, something every teenager should see, boys or girls.
