HOLLYWOOD STUD JOEL KINNAMAN TELLS US HOW HE PUT COMMON UP ON GAME: “HE WAS LIKE, ‘OH SH*T! I HAVEN’T HEARD THIS!'”

[After teaming up with Liam Neeson and Common for their new “Run All Night” thrill ride, actor Joel Kinnaman tells SOHH about the experience and how music sometimes prepares him for his biggest on-screen roles.]

I was listening to Jay Electronica [during the “Run All Night” production]. I remember I played [music] to [co-star] Common and he was like, “Oh sh*t! I haven’t heard this!” I played a song to Common that he hadn’t heard. That made my day.

I had the biggest premiere of my life, after I had gotten out of acting school, I was in a big play for “Crime & Punishment,” and it was the opening of a new national theater and it had received as much coverage for a play you could receive in Sweden.

I was the centerpiece and couldn’t leave the stage for three hours and forty-five minutes, so it was on me.

And for some reason, I was listening to Bob Marley and jamming and it worked out really well.

oel Kinnaman has insisted he is never concerned about whether making huge films will impact his personal life.

Joel Kinnaman reveals he learned “a lot of life lessons” while shooting Child 44.

The 35-year-old Swedish-American actor recently wrapped filming on the dramatic thriller, which focuses on political corruption in the former Soviet Union.

And Joel is blown away by how educational starring in the picture proved to be.

“It’s one of those roles – there’s a lot of life lessons I’m learning in the process,” he told USA Today. “It’s so much fun.”

Child 44 centres on disgraced member of the Soviet military police Leo Demidov, portrayed by Tom Hardy, who begins investigating a string of child murders in the 1950s. But when evidence mounts against some of the highest government officials, Leo finds himself the target of a lethal conspiracy.

Joel portrays villain Wasilij in Child 44, a film produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Safe House helmer Daniel Espinosa.

And although the estimated budget to create the thriller was a whopping $50 million, Joel isn’t concerned about how being involved with high-profile studio projects like this will impact his personal life.

“I never think about things like that,” Joel said when asked about whether he’s worried his life will change if Child 44 is a huge hit. “That’s the kind of question you get before you do a big movie? That’s not how it works. You create your own world. A lot of people trick themselves walking around with that kind of expectation. I don’t expect anything to change. I’ll adapt to make it as normal as possible.”

Child 44, which is based on the eponymous 2008 novel by Tom Rob Smith, will be released to American theatres on April 17.

Spring is approaching in New York and the Ritz-Carlton in the southeast corner of Central Park has a large crowd of journalists gathered to conduct interviews for the film "Run all night", an action-thriller noir traits which Sweden's hottest Swedish actor in the US has the role of the son of Liam Neesons assassin. Hollywood Swedes Alexander Skarsgard and Noomi Rapace have paved the way but now the hunt for the next big star from Bergman's country is initiated. There are several candidates, but it's Joel Kinnaman now standing at the front of the spotlight, there is no doubt.

Joel Kinnaman almost looks like the archetype of a Nordic man with småspretig mustache and beard and he is - it turns out when he sits down opposite me - equipped with a can of Swedish snuff. That he also is 6'2" and built as a strong man reinforces the impression. Prillan brand snuff lower lip, he calls jokingly "relapse" and perhaps it is not so odd considering everything that has happened lately. With the television series "The Killing" - the American version of the Danish "offense" - won Joel Kinnaman critics and audience appreciation in the US. Starring in the new version of "Robocop" last year meant that he took a quick step into Hollywood's top layer. If he stays there remains to be seen, but the prospects are good. To the many new roles he has secured the future belongs role of Rick Flag Series giant DC Comics 'Suicide Squad' as well as many of its competitor Marvel movies are supposed to grow into a long series of films. The requirements are high, many projects and nerves may need to be reassured of tobacco from home.

To meet Joel Kinnaman alone has required several weeks of negotiations. He's just in New York for the day. After the premiere of "Run All Night" tonight - where he will walk along the red carpet with his girlfriend, 22-year-old Swedish tattoo artist and model Cleo Wattström (which he recently moved in with in Los Angeles) - he takes flight back to Canada to resume filming at seven o'clock the next morning.

- The working title of the film is "Beyond the Pale" ("Backcounty"). A psychological thriller set in Northern Ontario frozen forests, he says on the spot on American English.

Why English? We sit alone does not yet, but with four other European journalists, I get to fight with to ask questions. At this point, Joel Kinnaman obviously accustomed to the American public relations machinery, and manages the interview situation with calm. Why did he want to be with the "Run all night"?

- There is a large cap film, but could just as well have been a small independent film, like "Beyond the Pale". Very few compromises have been made in the work on it. And it was mainly the complex father-and-son relationship in the story that attracted me. I have no close male friend who at no time has had a complicated relationship with his father.
Joel Kinna's own father is American, mother is Swedish, and therefore he has both American and Swedish citizenship. He lived in the US already during high school, as an exchange student for one year of high school in Texas. But despite the many ties to the US, which has recently been strengthened with the purchase of a house in West Hollywood, he feels most Swedish.

- At least when I'm in the US, says he fixed now in Swedish with Stockholm Dialect.

It is later in the day, we sit finally on-one in a hotel room with views over The Pond in Central Park. For a long time he wanted to move to New York, midway between family and friends in Stockholm and the film industry in Los Angeles. But today he enjoys in the syd kaliforniska concrete jungle, which he thinks has undergone a change.

- Thus, the LA will probably forever be a magnet for the world's idiots, he says, laughing.

- But something has happened that violate the tradition of interesting Swedes moving to New York and cardboard heads move to LA. Above all it is a lot of music people who have moved to LA. Superficiality is available almost everywhere, and for people who want to exploit one's celebrity status New York is actually worse. In LA there are so many in the industry itself that it becomes easier to navigate away from superficiality.

Maybe that's his personality that makes it easier to escape the superficial? Joel Kinnaman himself seems exceptionally unadulterated. There is no fawning there, and sometimes watching a light Södermalm blokes attitude developed, enhanced by a curse and a softly fillers such as "like". But the attitude and tone are always a hot chosefrihet and constant proximity of humor. A good example of how this appears in Kinnaman is the YouTube clip from 2012 where SVT's then CEO Eva Hamilton interview him about "Robocop". Or as Hamilton happens to say, "Robocock". The seemingly Freudian felsägningen caused Joel Kinnaman to quickly respond "It's porn movie version, and I should not be in," whereupon he burst into a roar of laughter before an embarrassed Eva Hamilton. It is hilarious situational comedy at an American way.

The clip also shows that although Joel Kinnaman feels Swedish, he is much more American as a social being. He carries - his unadulterated attitude despite - in a verbal flow and a wit that is standard in any US talk show anytime.

How does it feel to one day sit in SVT's morning sofa and the other with Conan O'Brien and Jon Stewart and be grilled?

- If there is something that the United States is the world leader in it's humor. It is appreciated in society in a completely different way than in Sweden, and the humor is seen as a major skills. Can you pull a funny story perceived it as to have good self-esteem. Therefore, television interviews also are significantly more stringent in the United States. US talk shows are led by the country's best comedians. Skavlan is good in Sweden, but otherwise it's usually just a journalist who is a bit charming or attractive empowered to carry television interviews.

What do you think the difference is?

- It is connected with the existence of a different culture when it comes to the social, USA. Here you can be happily chatting with someone at the bus stop. Swedes are indeed often bothered by it, which I always thought was difficult. In Sweden it is more immigrants who are so open.

But Sweden was long the playing field. Malmö Theatre Academy, years at Gothenburg City Theatre, the first big roles, and - of course - "Fast Cash" films. Film trilogy, based on Jens Lapidus crime novels, has been more important for Joel Kinna's career than anything else; the first film was the key to the first star in the United States. But to repeat the portrait of JW in the planned American version of "fast cash" would be uninteresting to him. He believes that takes the edge off the story by moving the action from Sweden to USA.

- I have always thought that "Fast Cash" is a film that's very typical Swedish. It has to do with our history as a social-democratic country, and the political climate that we've got now, which began to show itself when the film is set. JW coming from the North, a region of the left tradition. He represented a new kind of person, sprung from the working class, but who still admires and wants to be like the upper class. This behavior is in my eyes once considered something ugly in Sweden, while in the US the contrary has always been something that has been celebrated. Here you are expected to want to be like the rich, and to strive for and emulate their lifestyle.

Moving the TV series "The crime" from Copenhagen to Seattle that was made in "The Kiilling", was Joel Kinnaman, however, open to. TV series received four seasons - the longest period he has spent with a character. Something he sees several advantages.

- It is the in depth in a completely different way. And the script for a television series recording is about 70 percent. The rest is about how I angle my character, which largely has to do with what I'm going through in my life at the moment. What music I listen to, what I'm happy or sad. So when I look at the sections again, they become time-markers for my life.

Can you see any disadvantages of television format?

- I can become very restless of it, the drama is so slow. To show new sides of a character can take weeks. It's like a TV series is a novel, and a feature film is a short story.

The theater then, how do you relate to it today? You are schooled on stage.

- I would actually have gone up on stage this year, on Broadway. I wanted to play "Long Day's Journey into Night". But then it suddenly fell into a lot of jobs that it was hard to say no to.

How important is your sister Melinda Kinnaman been for you when it comes to theater interest?

- Initially, she was extremely important as inspiration. I was and watched her in 1998 when she made 'Persons 3: 1 "with Lars Norén, and it was so incredibly awesome. But today she is more an inspiration to me in life in general. She is something of a levnadskonstnär.

The dramaturgy in Joel Kinna's own life seems to revolve in a violent spiral of success, where he is currently very far from the first role in the sawn SVT soap opera "Metropolis".
Can you ever get vertigo when you look back on the past few years in your life?

- Sure, there have been moments when I kind of have been astonished at everything that happens. But my career development still feels natural. After a while you adapt yourself and goals change. Like even disappointments. Some friends may think it is pompous when I get upset about a defeat today, and say something like, "you have so much else going on." But I think you have to be true to yourself in relation to where you are in life at the moment.

What impact has your celebrity status for you?

- I have no need to increase my fame by something other than my work. That's why I am not active on social media. But the actors are artists that have to be invited to appear, so there is obviously a purely creative reason to advertise your name. But I only want to work on interesting projects, and with people I respect and admire. It's a simple compass to follow which makes it possible to skip all the bullshit.

NEW YORK. I'm a big fan of Joel Kinnaman.


Not so much for "fast cash" - and I have not seen Johan Falk films - but most of what he has done here, most especially "The Killing" the US version of the Danish TV series "offense".

Joel Kinnaman, 35, has since played against and found to par with Hollywood stars like Gary Oldman, Liam Neeson and Ed Harris.

Joel Kinnaman could be our next big international star.

In an interview with Expressen, I was asked by Karin Sörbring about who I could imagine that Harry Smith in a possible film of my crime novel "Punish and Let Die".

I replied Joel Kinnaman.

He is far too young for the role - Harry Smith is more 50 than 35 - but there's something in Kinna's movements, little truliga facial expressions and sometimes available nonchalance that makes me largely sees Joel Kinnaman in front of me when I think of and write Harry Smith.

It's kind of like when the author Elmore Leonard once told me that he always sees Clint Eastwood when he creates his novel heroes.

I can understand it: Clint Eastwood was combusting neighbors in its heyday.

The last movie I saw with Joel Kinnaman called "Run all night" and is a more than ordinary thriller and action movie than you might expect, a strong number three or even four weak in my book. Liam Neeson and Ed Harris plays good old friends who become new, gruesome enemies in the old days.

It's about gangsters, it's about New York, it's all about friendship and it's about fathers and their sons.

Kinnaman plays the son of Neeson.

It is also part of the New York Rangers.

The commentator shouts "Saaaaved by Lundqvist"

If Joel Kinnaman can be a new Stellan Skarsgard, we have already an international star in the NHL, his name is, of course, Henrik Lundqvist.

"Run all night" is set during the evening and night in New York, and a match with the New York Rangers play a major role.

It is on TV in the background, it's on the radio, people mention it, and now and then we hear a television scream comment:

"Saaaaved by Lundqvist."

Match and Madison Square Garden has a significant role in how Neesons character manages to escape his pursuers - and ... I will not tell you how if you are going to see the movie.

And I am not longer sure that the last chance for a Stanley Cup ring for Henrik Lundqvist disappeared when the Los Angeles Kings won the dramatic and uncertain finals last summer.

Against all odds, the New York Rangers very often - at least occasionally - a very well-playing team.

When Lundqvist was gone because of the nasty injury in his neck, his deputy, Cam Talbot, surprisingly good, but of course it is an unchallenged fact that should the New York Rangers pick Stanley Cup requires a Henrik Lundqvist in its best form.

I actually think his body and shape was feeling pretty good by the two-month injury break. "King Henry" is 33, NHL season is long and every opportunity for recovery is important.
To perform on the pitch is not enough

Like many of the big, popular American sports stars - preferably homegrown quarterbacks in the NFL - driving Henrik Lundqvist with his wife, Therese, a foundation that seems to stop short of food and supplies for children in New York's poor neighborhoods.

There is a good range of celebrities like Henrik Lundqvist had to stand in a television special for just that purpose.

It's called "The Mask" and involves a number of famous people will help to design and create a new goalie mask for Henrik Lundqvist. The sections can be seen at Madison Square Gardens site, msg.com, and you will find Lundqvist along with celebrity chef (and one of my favorite tavern) Mario Batali, the former tennisässet John McEnroe, DJ Tiesto n, actor Michael J Fox and racerässet Jeff Gordon .

Are you supposed to be really well-liked and respected as a sports star in this country it is not enough to perform on the field, you should ideally have a lot of charitable Jidder on the side too.

I have over the years have never heard anyone say a bad or nasty words about Henrik Lundqvist.

There, you take what you want.

I do not think Hollywood stars have the same demands on themselves to stand up for society's vulnerable like that.

And I do not know what people say or do not say about Joel Kinnaman.

Have you not seen him in "Robocop" so watch it and check the scenes against Gary Oldman where Oldman has his whole body to play with, but there Kinnaman has only his face as the rest of him is, like, blown off.

It is an example of the large acting virtually anything.

Seymour Stein was the last I did get to meet Polar, under the leadership of Jan Gradvall, held a discussion on the Swedish music on Bird Street (see above). Stein goes and hears bad, but is a living legend since he started the record label Sire - Ramones, Talking Heads, Madonna and others.

No one can defend what rogles Andre Deveaux did to Vasteras Per Helmersson before the match in four qualifying meetings, but I still think it was a feat of Rögle to go up in the SHL.

And it was almost as great achievement of Malmö Redhawks to Thursday beat Leksand in the seventh game and be ready for SHL next season.

‘Child’ support: Kinnaman embraces another dark role as sadistic cop



NEW YORK — As a sadistic Communist cop in the Russian-set thriller “Child 44,” Joel Kinnaman tackles yet another morally questionable character.

The Sweden native first came to fame here as Stephen Holder, the street-smart, ex-addict detective in “The Killing,” which ended its four-season run last year.

He has since starred as the tortured machine in the “Robocop” remake and last month as Liam Neeson’s estranged son in “Run All Night.”

“I know there are some actors who have some strategy about their careers, and they want to be ‘stars,’ ” Kinnaman, 35, told the Herald.

“When they find something the audience connects with it’s, ‘That’s a perfect role for me.’ They hone that thing to do it over and over again,

“I find that I do the opposite. I do something and then want to do the opposite. For me, it’s a competition I have with myself, proving my range in a way by doing a lot of different things.”

Based on the novel by Tom Rob Smith and set in the early 1950s, “Child 44” is loosely based on a true story of a serial killer who targeted children.

Tom Hardy (the new Mad Max) is the detective who tries to find the murderer while Kinnaman’s Vasili Nikitin is eager to block him, invoking the Communist Party line of dictator Joseph Stalin.

“I’m the sociopathic antagonist to Tom,” Kinnaman said.

“Tom and I work in Stalin’s secret police. Because Stalin says crime is a Western disease. When the child of Tom’s character’s best friend is murdered, that’s a crime against the state. But if you admit that, you get sent to the Gulag,” the fearsome Siberian prison camps.

Kinnaman finds such dark material appealing.

“It’s always the pursuit to go deeper into your emotions and touch those areas where we rarely go. Dark movies take us there.”

Kinnaman smiled, “It might sound pretentious. Sure, I’ve got a career and want to do well, but there’s a search (as an actor) for understanding yourself and being human.

“You try to find those parts where you go into unknown territory.”

It's time for another action movie with Joel Kinnaman. This time is called the film "Run all night," and that is exactly what his character does - fleeing assassin by the New York night

I had been looking a long time for a movie that was on the father-son theme, and this was such a good script that it was obviously to accept it. In addition, it attracted course to play against Liam Neeson says Joel Kinnaman when the TT meet him at a hotel in New York.

Being chased by killer

In the "Run all night" playing Liam Neeson plays a former assassin with mafia ties and Ed Harris, his childhood friend and manager. Highly realistic

It really feels that "Run all night" was recorded on location in New York. The director Jaume Collet-Serra notes that this was his intention that the film would feel really realistic. And Joel Kinnaman says:

- It happens too often that movies are being made in, for example, Toronto, though it is supposed to be New York. This did do really good reason. It is really New York.

Kinnaman has now Los Angeles base. He owns a house there, but thy great filming means that he is not there very often. He believes that during 2015 maximum will spend a few weeks there.

- I like it in LA. But wherever you are, so devoid always something. I'm restless to me, I will not stay long anywhere. But LA is a much more interesting city now than when I moved there. Run all night is an action movie that also depicts a father and son relationship ruptured. The film is about the gangster and assassin Jimmy Conlon (Liam Neeson), who has a night to decide where his loyalties lie: with the gangster family that he himself opted for or with her son Mike (Joel Kinnaman), which he long ago abandoned.

When his son becomes the innocent target of criminal gangs, the aging and alcoholic Jimmy the chance to set things right. Mike, who chose a different life than his father, is clearly marked by his childhood and struggle with aggression problems — and to not be like his father.

I try to find characters who find themselves in a moral gray area. Because I personally believe that life takes its shape precisely in grey scales, so I do not think about characters who is purely good or evil. They appeal to me. Good people do bad things and bad people doing good things.

New Swedes picked for airport Hall of Fame

Royals, designers, athletes, artists, businesspeople and fashion icons are among the faces welcoming travellers at the airport. 60 of the 93 celebrities were replaced by new portraits this week in the gallery, which was inaugurated in 2006. Their portraits and the greeting “Welcome to my Hometown” will meet tourists and other travellers when they arrive in Sweden.

“Stockholm Arlanda Airport is a window to the world and the airport is the first thing our foreign visitors are met by. Arlanda is an important meeting place with more than 20 million visitors a year and it is an excellent arena for promoting the city and the country,” Swedavia market director Michael Persson Gripkow said in a statement.

Among the new faces are actress Josephine Bornebusch - star of the 'Welcome to Sweden' sitcom by Greg Poehler - fashion blogger Kenza Zouiten, opera singer Malena Ernman - who represented Sweden in Eurovision 2009 - Hollywood actress Noomi Rapace, Swedish DJ wonder Avicii, football players John Guidetti and Kennedy Bakircioglü, Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel and the young Princess Estelle.

The idea is for the gallery to reflect the contemporary icons of Sweden, but it has not been updated since 2006.

“Stockholm Hall of Fame will now become a more modern and alive gallery where new famous Stockholmers will welcome people by giving them a personal picture of the city and what it stands for. We hope that the portraits are going to inspire our visitors and make them curious of Stockholm as early as at the airport,” said Persson Gripkow.

Swedish television personality Yankho Kamwendo, who is one of the new faces in the Hall of Fame, told regional newspaper Upsala Nya Tidning that he was excited to represent the capital.

"It is a fantastic honour to represent the city you live in. It's a delighful mix of people too," he said.

Some of the familiar portraits set to remain on the Arlanda walls include Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, actor Stellan Skarsgård, director Ingmar Bergman, Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustav and Queen Silvia, children's author Astrid Lindgren and tennis legend Björn Borg.

ust over a year ago, Joel Kinnaman was learning the hard way that no one knows anything in Hollywood. As the title character of Brazilian director José Padilha’s ambitious “RoboCop” reboot, Kinnaman was expecting to see his profile—already growing, thanks to his starring turn on AMC’s “The Killing”—elevated a notch at the film’s release. But then the Hollywood gods intervened. “ ‘RoboCop’ got hit by half the country being buried under a snowstorm that weekend,” he explains, the disappointment in his voice still palpable, between bites of a gourmet burger at Hollywood gastropub the Pikey. “I’m still proud of it.”

Kinnaman regrouped slightly and assessed his aims. “Things always fluctuate, and you’ve got to keep your eye on what you want to do and why. Then be patient and not sell yourself short. You can only control your work and remaining passionate about it. That’s the trick—and now everything is going really well. Even then, offers were already coming in.”

Three grabbed his attention: the action thriller “Run All Night,” opposite Liam Neeson; the heavily anticipated “Child 44,” out this week, based on a best-selling book by British writer Tom Rob Smith and starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, and Gary Oldman; and “The Bends” with Rosamund Pike (scheduling the pair is proving difficult).

Clearly, Kinnaman’s career is heating up to the degree that no one in the know is surprised that he replaced Hardy in David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad.” Currently filming another thriller, “Backcountry,” in Canada, Kinnaman will immediately join the rest of the stellar cast: Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Jared Leto, Viola Davis, Scott Eastwood, and Cara Delevingne.

In “Child 44,” he plays one of his least sympathetic characters yet. Set in Stalinist Russia in 1953, the film features Kinnaman as loyal Stalinist Vasili, capable of the most heinous acts and riddled with hatred for Leo Demidov (Hardy), who is trying to stop a serial killer of children against much resistance in Moscow.

“I was drawn to the idea of playing a sociopath,” Kinnaman says. “I really like those kind of roles, too. Often they are the bad guys but also some of the people you learn the most from playing. They are the ones that are usually the furthest from you. I loved working on the film. It felt like we were in summer camp; very intense, emotional summer camp. And then of course to work with Tom and Noomi and, most of all, Daniel [Espinosa] again—I love working with directors over and over again, that shorthand you build on a movie; you have it from the first day and it’s always there.”

Kinnaman and Espinosa, a fellow Swede, are close friends who have now worked together on three projects, including 2010’s Swedish film “Snabba Cash” (retitled “Easy Money” in the U.S.) and 2012’s “Safe House,” starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds.

Their shorthand, however, led to some consternation on the film’s set in Prague. “It was the very first day of shooting, with 20 extras and crew in a room. Daniel said something that pissed me off, in Swedish. Then we started having a big argument, screaming at each other, then he walked out and I walked out,” Kinnaman recalls. “Then we came back into the room and said, ‘Let’s go.’ We know each other very well. Arguments don’t bother us, and often when we work, we hardly have to talk.”



Rapace is a friend as well, and Kinnaman says she “may have done her best work in ‘Child 44.’ ” She speaks admiringly of his work in turn. “Joel’s acting is beautiful. Every take we did was different, exploring the scenes and the relationship together. I loved it.”

Before leaving for a set, the Kinnaman way is late nights and lots of them. “I read the script over and over. I read the book twice. It’s usually nights when I work on roles, when everything else is closed down,” he says. “Your mind quiets down a little bit because you’re tired. But I don’t go to bed and end up wandering around in my bedroom for four or five hours. All of a sudden it’s 6 in the morning and I probably have to go to work or shoot that day. But my imagination kicks in a lot more when I’m a little fatigued. The worst feeling I can have on set is too many coffees. That makes me present in the wrong way. If I’m tired, I can access everything in a much easier way. I sort of melt right into it.”

His current preparations sound even more exhausting—he films during the day, goes to the gym afterward, sleeps, and eats. “I hate food so much right now,” he grimaces. “I’m trying to look like a cartoon, so I’ve got to gain weight. I gained 28 pounds in eight weeks; I’m trying to do 10 more pounds. If you want to gain this much weight in a short period of time, you can’t eat clean. There’s a lot of mashed potatoes and hamburgers. I’m getting a little flabby.”

“Run All Night” was different again, a strategy Kinnaman admits is virtually his only one. “The culture I grew up in revered the actors who took very different roles. If I was ever so lucky as to have an audience that followed my work, my dream would be that they’d go to see a new film wondering, ‘What’s he going to do with this role?’ ”

Playing Neeson’s son was a dream scenario. “I will never forget his performance in ‘Schindler’s List.’ And ‘Run All Night’ was a beautiful, emotional script, but I did have some notes. My character, Mike, was too clean-cut for someone growing up with a known gangster and alcoholic father. That’s going to leave traces, built-up anger. They accepted my notes and I do feel they added dimension.” Neeson calls Kinnaman “a terrific, energetic actor and a lovely guy.” Kinnaman simply observed him in action. “Liam doesn’t complicate things unnecessarily; there is no chatter. You go in, do your job, and if you carry the conversation of the story inside of you, you don’t have to overthink things. That can be very powerful.”

Kinnaman first acted by chance as a child, and sees parallels with his older self. “My sister was dating Ingmar Bergman’s son, who was directing this Swedish soap opera. They needed a 10-year-old: I got the part and filmed for a year. I’ve since heard I was very opinionated then and was already rewriting my lines.” He didn’t act again until long after school, when he observed friends getting accepted to drama school and thought he might try it out as well, enlisting an older actor as his coach. “One time he looked at me and said, ‘You could really do this if you want.’ And I felt that, too. It was the first time I felt that I might actually be good at something.”

‘The Killing’ Star Joel Kinnaman Wants Sweden to Stop Killing Minks



Nearly 30,000 people have called for an end to fur farming in Sweden – and now, they’ve been joinedby a famous fur foe: Stockholm-born actor Joel Kinnaman!

On the hit US drama TV series The Killing, Joel searches for cold-blooded murderers. And now in real life, he is looking out for victims of cruel and unnecessary killing – in this case, minks on fur farms in his native country of Sweden.

Joel, who also starred in RoboCop and Suicide Squad, was saddened to learn that Sweden still allows the cruel mink industry to continue, even though both fox and chinchilla fur farming has ended there. So the actor wrote to Sven-Erik Bucht, the Swedish Minister for Rural Affairs, expressing his desire to put an end to all fur farming in Sweden and urging the minister to place a ban on the industry as a whole.

“Sweden is known around the world for its ‘green’ credentials, but mink farming is most definitely not green. I was delighted to learn that the last remaining chinchilla fur farm in Sweden closed down in 2014 and that fox farming has also been phased out in the country. Please join Austria, the UK and other nations by banning all fur farms.”

Animals on fur farms spend their entire lives confined to cramped, filthy wire cages. Fur farmers use the cheapest and cruellest killing methods available, including suffocation, electrocution, gassing and poisoning. There is nothing but a horrible, painful death for animals in the fur industry, and the time has come to end this cruelty.

The Swedish star of Netflix’s The Killing is happy, in a quietly brooding sort of way



Joel Kinnaman is intense. He takes long pauses between questions and answers with a voice that’s low and gruff. Trivial queries about personal style are dismissed easily but firmly. It’s not that he’s unhappy to talk. He just doesn’t want to mince words. He prefers to speak with a purpose.


It’s a trait that has served the 35-year-old well. He’s quickly made a name for himself playing similarily intense characters. As recovering drug addict Det. Stephen Holder on Netflix’s The Killing, Kinnaman was regularly met with a barrage of dark storylines and twisted characters. It’s the kind of job he enjoys because it makes him…happier? “I have this feeling like the darker the material, the more light-spirited I am when I go home,” he says. “I like to let it consume me, and when it’s done and I let go, I feel happier.”


If that’s true, Kinnaman will have a lot to be happy about this year. In addition to two grim films (Run All Night with Liam Neeson and Child 44, about a serial killer in Stalin’s Soviet Union) he will costar in Suicide Squad, a villain-heavy film set in the DC Comics universe. Before moving to the US in 2009, Kinnaman was already a bona fide movie star in his native Sweden, with a Guldbagge Award (a Swedish Oscar) to his name for Best Actor in his breakout film, Easy Money. Since then, he’s been building his career in North America by moving seamlessly between television and film.


Eventually, there’s a break in his dark, intense demeanor. It comes in the form of a laugh. A laugh that, while just as low and gruff as his voice, has warmth to it. It happens after I point out his continuous proximity to dark stories. “Yeah,” he says with that laugh. “I get all this shit out at work and am really quite content in life.” Go figure. – Bianca Teixeira
