ELLE met Alexander Skarsgård in Stockholm. But got to fly to Hollywood to shoot the hottie who do not want to talk about dad.

Alexander Skarsgard in Damernas Värld – Sweden

He came, he saw, he conquered…

He is one of the Swedish actors that have earned the title Hollywood Star. Since the move to the US eight years ago the oldest son of the Skarsgård clan has had several successful rolls. DV met Alexander Skarsgård in Los Angeles.

‘In two years, Swedes will be out of fashion and I will be unemployed’, Alexander Skarsgård jokes. We meet at the studio at Universal Studios in LA. It’s relaxing to interview Alexander Skarsgård. He doesn’t want to be put on a pedestal in a conversation. Despite the hype that has followed him the last four years – and despite him being interviewed by international press all day long – the conversation and the tone is unpretentious and comfortable. As if we actually met in a coffee house in Södermalm in Stockholm and not LA. And this is no wonder since that is where his heart is. Today, Alexander Skarsgård has lived in Los Angeles for more than eight years, and he likes his new hometown, but the longing for his old hometown is always there.

- My family and childhood friends still live in Stockholm. I like living here a lot, but the life style back home is so different. In Stockholm, all of my best friends live within five blocks from each other, so we never had to call each other on the phone. If I went down to the local coffee shop, I always ran into someone I knew. We didn’t have a car growing up, but here you have to drive everywhere and plan your social life. Sometimes it feels as if I live in a bubble where the spontaneity partly is gone.

However, it’s clear that Alexander Skarsgård has come to the sun in southern California to stay. Since he conquered the TV-world with his parts in the HBO-series Generation Kill and the vampire drama True Blood, where he plays the Viking vampire Eric Northman, the movie parts are rolling in.

After parts in thrillers like 13 (2010), the remake of the 70s version of Straw Dogs (2011), Lars von Triers Melancholia (2011) and still to be released independent movies like The East, Disconnect and What Maisie knew, he can currently be seen in one of the main leads in Battleship. Battleship is a sci-fi-action-blockbuster, inspired by a game, and it is Skarsgård’s biggest movie to date starring Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch and Rihanna.

- When I look for new projects I look for a challenge, Alexander Skarsgård says. So it was a great experience to make an artistic movie like Melancholia to follow that up with Battleship.

Last year, Alexander Skarsgård ended a 2-year-long relationship with actress Kate Bosworth and now the rumors about who he currently is dating are roaming the internet. The relation with Rihanna seems to be strictly professional, but Alexander doesn’t comment on it. However he does admit being impressed by her.

- She is incredible. So beautiful and she works really hard. For example when we had filming scheduled on a Friday, she would fly from Hawaii to LA the day after to perform to the world at the MTV Awards. After that she flew right back to us in Hawaii and showed up without being tired when filming started early on Monday, ready for a long day of work.

Alexander himself is constantly on the go. It’s a hectic life, to say the least.

- Yeah, it’s been crazy lately. We finished shooting the fourth season of True Blood in July and since then I’ve practically been traveling and lived in hotels for 6 months. I made two movies in New York, after that I went to Sweden for a few days to see my family, went to Rio de Janeiro where my Dad was filming, flew to Louisiana to another set, visited a couple of film festivals and came back here to LA about a month ago. It’s stressful to travel like that but I like it. Right now we are filming season five of True Blood.

The sexy vampire series is the top show of HBO since Sopranos. And for a lot of the viewers it’s the thrill to see vampire Viking Eric Northman show his muscles and compete with the gentleman vampire Bill Compton about the love of the waitress Sookie. Alexander Skarsgård is a big fan of creator Alan Ball, who is behind series such as Six Feet under, and getting this part was a dream offer for him.

- The idea of playing a vampire was so appealing. It sounded really cool. But it was the fact that Alan was behind the project that made me decide to join. I loved his earlier productions and I thought the combination of HBO and Alan Ball was really fantastic. Add to this that I liked the character Eric Northman a lot. He was introduced in the series as a bad guy, but once you get to know him it gets clear that he has a softer side and that he is sort of melancholic which I like.

Alexander Skarsgård is wearing blue Whyred jeans and a blue Burberry shirt – a fitting choice of color since the movie Battleship largely takes place at sea on a huge warrior ship, in a fight with an alien invasion force. Alexander Skarsgårds own background in the Swedish Marines 15 years ago have been very useful for his part as Sergeant Brad Colbert in Generation Kill (taking place during the Iraq war) and also as the part as Commander Stone Hopper in Battleship.

- When I did my military service in Sweden, I wasn’t in command but I’ve used my experience from leadership and how it works in the military and the dynamics between Commanders and soldiers. Small details, like how to give orders.

The Swedish hype following the Millennium Trilogy is rubbing off on life in Hollywood. Especially the last year has been very generous toward Swedish actors and the coming year 2012 doesn’t look anything less. Noomi Rapace stars in Ridley Scotts Prometheus, Alicia Vikander in the costume drama Anna Karenina, Mikael Persbrandt in the very longed for Tolkien movie The Hobbit and Lena Endre in Paul Thomas Andersons already much talked about movie about a cult The Master, just to mention a few. Alexander Skarsgård is not surprised:

- We have always had great movie makers in Sweden. It’s a tradition and comes from directors such as Ingmar Bergman and Bo Widegren, but also from actors like Ingrid Bergman, Greta Garbo and Max von Sydow. But maybe what’s going on right now is more of a trend. A couple of years ago it was all about Australian people.

Another since a long time famous Hollywood Swede, is of course Stellan Skarsgård. He doesn’t live in Los Angeles, but he often visits. But Alexander misses his siblings, two of them are also actors and very successful (Gustaf who last starred in Björn Runges Happy End and Bill in his Guldbagge nominated lead in Simon och Ekarna). A lot of Skype conversations are made to Stockholm, most of them to Mom My Skarsgård, who was featured in Damernas Värld last summer when she openheartedly told the story of her alcoholism and how it led up to the divorce from Stellan Skarsgård.

Alexander is proud over her decision to publicly talk about it:

- That was a very brave thing to do. Mom’s alcoholism started when she was diagnosed with cancer. The drinking made the death anxiety less apparent. Today she is sober and well and works as a therapist helping others suffering from alcoholism.

Parallel with getting bigger parts in the USA, Alexander still has a foot in the Swedish film industry, doing a voice over with his Dad in the animated movie Metropia (2009) and one of the leads in Johan Klings drama Puss (2010). And then there is Melancholia, shot in Trollhättan, and once again with Dad Stellan Skarsgård in one of the parts. Currently Alexander is not attached to a Swedish film project, but he is enthusiastic over how the Swedish Film industry is developing.

- Nowadays the Swedish Film industry is very vibrant. A lot of new interesting film directors are getting the chance to make movies. Ruben Östlund and Jens Assur to mention a few of them. This was not the case when I moved to Los Angeles 8 years ago. However, you can never compare Hollywood to the Swedish film industry. Almost every movie made in Sweden is an independent production with very strong characters. For instance, it would be impossible to make a Battleship about the Swedish marines, he laughs.



Alexander Skarsgård – Facts

In 2009 he shot the Lady Gaga video Paparazzi. In 2010 he starred in Johan Klings drama Puss and last year he starred in Melancholia by Lars von Trier and the remake of American Straw Dogs.

Other facts: Have been given a doctors honor degree at Leeds Metropolitan University, where he studied for 6 months in 1996. He is a devoted supporter of football team Hammarby.

He is playing one of the leads in the sci-fi-action movie Battleship.

On playing Eric Northman and choosing to do True Blood:
“The biggest thing was Alan Ball, because I am a big fan of his work,” Skarsgard says.
“I met with him and I really liked him a lot, and I liked the character a lot, a guy who starts out, what you think is the villain, but then you can kind of understand him, and there’s a softer side to him as well and a sadness that I really liked.”

On his father, Stellan Skarsgard, and working with him in Melancholia:
“Dad is one of my best friends, so I love him so much,” he says. ”He is a really, really cool cat, and we worked together in 1983, my first movie (Ake och hans varld), back in Sweden and we have done an animated movie - where we don’t work together you just do voices. But this was the first time we actually had some scenes together, and it was an amazing experience.”

On preparing for Battleship:
“I was in the Swedish navy 15 years ago, and I worked on a mini-series, called Generation Kill about a platoon of Marines and both of those experiences were very useful in preparing to do this, Battleship,” Skarsgard says.
“It was more about the character and stuff about leadership and the dynamic and the relationship between officers and enlisted guys and little things like how do you address them? But it was also different; I play a commanding officer of a navy destroyer; that’s not what I did in the navy in Sweden.”

On why he joined the Swedish military at age 19:
“Because I come from a family of pacifists and I am a bit of a pacifist myself, I didn’t do it because I wanted to kill people,” he says.
“I’m from Sweden, no one is going to attack; we are not going to attack another country any time soon.
“It was more selfishly, I wanted the experience, I wanted that challenge.
“Growing up in a concrete jungle, I wanted to feel what it was like to be way out on the islands and there was this unit I was very intrigued and interested in and so I applied and got it.”

Alexander Skarsgård covers the #2 issue of Stayhard magazine, a magazine from his native Sweden.



Swedish male actors have mostly been playing eastern-European criminals in American movies. Alexander Skarsgård is an exception. Our Swedish star is the new favorite actor in Hollywood. He has proved to be able to play very different roles, as to a pretty teenage boy in Swedish comedy movies, a sexy vampire in the American TV-serial True Blood, some sci-fi drama in Melancholia from Lars von Trier, and now in the new movie Battleship where he plays an American navy officer speaking perfect American English.

Alexander enters the conference room at Universal Studio in LA in a dark Burberry shirt and in a pair of dark jeans from Whyred. My first question, as he sat down, was if girls often ask him to bite them. -Sometimes girls ask me to do that but I have not yet done it. How would that look like in a paparazzi picture, if I would play to be a vampire biting young girls, haha.

Alexander is one of the most asked actors and as such a part of the Hollywood-machinery – all that is included. But even if he is surrounded by different managers, publicist and personal assistants, it has not gotten into his head. On the contrary, he seems to take it all pretty cool. He is exactly as cheerful, openhearted, nice and polite as he was when he for the first time arrived to LA.

Thanks to True Blood, Alexander is now a superstar and he has lived for almost 10 years in the USA. In the beginning nobody recognized him in LA. – That was very nice after being recognized everywhere in Sweden. My father is a celebrity and I have been acting since I was a child. So it was a very learning and healthy experience for me to come to the USA and learn to stand on my own feet without being recognized by anybody. It developed my personality as well as an actor and my private me. But now the publicity is sometimes overwhelming and it still feels strange to be recognized everywhere I go. But of course it feels good and I´m happy that True Blood is so popular.

At this very moment Alexander is busy making the actual season of True Blood. He has a couple of free hours for interviews. -The work schedule is hard, he tells. Long working hours with little sleep. -The life in LA is not actually that glamorous as one would think. Most of my time I spend working and I very seldom go out. Bars and clubs are not that fun in LA either. They are actually quite cheesy and because everybody is driving a car, most of the places close already at 1.30 am. Also they mostly play bad music. Those times I go out I go out to listen for a band.

In True Blood Alexander plays the vampire Eric Northman. Sex plays a big part in the serial and his character has become a sex icon all over the world. But Alexander says that he tries not to think about the character to be sexy, it has to come naturally, otherwise it does not work. – If you just try, it goes all wrong and everything feels like a fake. For me, Eric is like a lion. A male lion can lay in the shadow and look tired and bored. At the same time though, he is fully concentrated and can react anytime with all his power, if needed.

Eric has a cool style and Alexander cooperates a lot with the dressers to decide how he should look. – I like his style, Alexander says. – It looks good with black, leather and silver jewelry. I like fashion and clothes but my private style is comfortable and plain.

When Alexander was a teenager he used to borrow the suits of dad Stellan, if he was going to official parties. Now he has his own closet full of handsome designer suits. Mostly he wears suits from Tom Ford, who is his favorite designer. – Tom Ford is, I think, an American but I still like his style. Otherwise I´m mostly interested in Scandinavian design, with straight lines. I like those clothes, which most of the Swedish guys like.

Alexander´s style is famous and his plain Scandinavian style works also for the Americans. When American guys tried before to make an impression with expensive clothes and accessories, they now see Alexander as a role model with his relaxed style with T-shirt and sneakers. Alexander shows that style and taste must not be expensive. He often combines different outfits with cheap and expensive clothes. Even if he likes fashion he does not see himself as a slave of fashion. – Fashion is fun and I like cool clothes but I do not pimp me up, like 15 hours, just to grab milk from a food store.

Alexander has previously said in interviews that vanity is the death of an actor. He explains what he means. – You are heading the wrong direction if you as an actor are thinking more of how good do you look for the public instead of playing the role believable.

Have you ever thought of making yourself uglier than you are? – Haha, I could try but it will be difficult. No, just kidding, when I was living in Sweden I got always to play this kind of roles as “the pretty guy”. In the USA it´s different, I play different roles and here you have more options than in Sweden.

Alexander’s actual movie is called “Battleship”, his first big budget movie. He plays an officer of the USA Navy who gets into a conflict with mean aliens together with his brother (Taylor Kitsch) and some others. Battleship is based on a classic Hasbro game and the film is directed by Peter Berg.

- It was fun to be a part of such a big Blockbuster-movie. A movie where the aliens are taking over, only works in the USA. To make a similar movie in Sweden with the Swedish Navy would not be that big. I know what I´m talking about since I made my army time in the Swedish Navy, haha!

The more popular Alexander becomes the more women want to be his friend – and girlfriend. But if you ask him about his love life he shuts down like a shell. This is something he wishes not to discuss with journalist

- There is a lot of false things in LA. A lot of people want to be a friend with a celebrity. I pay attention and I can see very quickly if somebody only wants to be friend with me just because I´m popular. I like to meet new people but I find out very soon if they only want to hang around with me so I could take them with me to fancy party or premiere.

Alexander Skarsgård was featured in a weekly on-line Russian magazine Beautiful OTHERSNOW. (Issue 22, dated December 1, 2011).

The interview is in Russian but Olga has translated it for us (Tack så mycket Olga!!) The photos are all stuff we’ve seen before of Alex, but what an amazing gallery of photos were included of him. There are eighteen (18!) pages of Alex in this magazine.

Alexander Skarsgård was born on August 25th, 1976 in the small town near the South side of Stockholm to the family of known actor, Stellan Skarsgård, who is known not only in Sweden, but beyond its borders. Besides Alexander, his parents, Stellan and My, were raising four sons and one daughter. Gustav and Bill are also actors, and Eija is successful in fashion business. Several years ago, Alexander’s parents got divorced, and the actor gained a step-brother.

Alexander’s début in the movies took place when he was 8 years old. He played a role in a movie, Ake and His World, that was loved by critics and that received several esteemed awards. After that, Alexander played a role in a Hunden som log, that made him famous among teenagers across Sweden. However, being famous, was not to the thirteen-year-old teenager’s liking. It was weighing on Alexander that he could not walk down the street without being recognized; and as the result, he decided to abandon his acting career. Later, in one of the interviews, the actor will say that the time was necessary for him to prove to himself his reliance on acting profession. “Fame for me is scary”, he states. “When people are looking at you, and you are reading about yourself in newspapers; at 13, it only creates great confusion. I thought, that if that what it means to be famous, then it’s clear that I don’t like it”.

During that time, Alexander served in Sweden’s navy for 15 month, returned home, tried to earn diploma in architecture, and decide that he needed to do something with his life. It is then, he returned to acting. At the age of 20, he enrolled in Leeds Metropolitan University, where he was learning acting skills. “I’ve spent my time watching soccer, getting drunk, and getting in trouble for six months”, he says. “But during that time is when the thought of “what do I want to do with my life” came to my mind. This is why I went to New York and started attending theater college; and as soon as I started, I realized that I truly missed it”. Yet, his Swedish roots called him back home. Upon return to Sweden, Alexander played a role in Swedish movie Hundtricket (The Dog Trick), and even was nominated for Best Supporting Actor “Guldbagge” (exact translation is “Golden Beatle”) Award for that role in the movie. That role made him incredibly famous, and he was voted “Sexiest man in Sweden” five times.

After that role, Alexander was offered numerous acting parts. One of the movies he played in, Wings of Glass, was shown during Moscow’s film festivals and had positive reviews of the critics. But soon, the actor started getting bored of monotonous roles, and he decided to try his luck again in Hollywood. He played a role in the movie “Zoolander” with Ben Stiller. A small role for the idiot-roommate was made even smaller once the film was edited. Even though the time during the shooting of the movie was fun-filled and enjoyable, Alexander was disappointed with his first experience working in the States, and he returned to Sweden once again. He got intrigued by theater and had a role in such plays as Who is Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Blood Marriage. Additionally, in 2003, Alexander showed himself as a talented screen-writer and director. His short film, To Kill a Child, was well received by critics. Nevertheless, the actor went to the States once again.

First taste of American fame came to Alexander after release of HBO’s mini-series Generation Kill. The actor got one of the major roles, the role of Sgt. Brad “Iceman” Colbert, after which he started to be recognized on the street of Los Angeles, where he was renting a place with his friends. Thinking back to that time, Alexander states: “The many young men would approach me after Generation Kill was out to talk about the war”. During the filming, Alexander gained many friends. “We spent 7 months in Mozambique, Nambia, and South Africa. It was the most taxing experience I have ever had. I’ve worked 142 out of 145 days of filming. We shot from Monday through Saturday; and on Sundays I was reading scenes for next week and worked with dialect coach (Alexander credits him for his great “American” accent he has now). I am very proud of Generation Kill. The filming was intense. I have never sacrificed that much, but I also never got as much back in return. The mini-series gives an idea of soldier’s reality, which is very different than what is shown on general TV and in the news”.

After that, in 2008, Alexander auditioned for a main character on HBO’s series True Blood. The producer of the series, Allan Ball, was so charmed by the young actor, that he approved him for the role of Eric Northman, even though, the actor originally auditioned for the role of Bill Compton. This year, the fourth season is being shown, in which many fans can see their favorite 1000 year old vampire.

In the last few years, the career of the actor was growing – Alexander played a role in Lady Gaga’s video Paparazzi, however it was mostly due to the fact that video’s director was his friend. Later, the movie 13 came to the screen, in which Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, and many others played as well; Swedish movie Puss, where he acted along side his brother Gustav; and a full-length cartoon Metropia, in which he did voice acting with his father and Juliette Lewis. Also, in 2010, Alexander worked with his father and brother doing voice acting on Swedish cartoon about Moomins family, Moomins and the Comet Chase. He truly caught attention of viewers and critics in Lars von Trier’s film Melancholia, with Kristen Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Stellan Skarsgård. In November, we can see the re-make of cult classic Dustin Hoffman’s movie Straw Dogs, with James Marsden and Kate Bosworth. And in a near future, the movie Battleship will be shown the big screen; in which the partner on the screen is the singer Rihanna.

But despite the popularity, Alexander, like most other Hollywood actors, doesn’t have personal trainer and PR-agent. “I don’t need someone who would hold my hand and speak for me. This makes me feel useless. I can hop on the metro myself, in order to get to work, and to choose my own clothes”.

The actor admits, that if he had to choose his favorite “famous person” it would be Gary Oldman. “I saw him on the metro in Brooklyn. All by himself, without any “superstar” mannerisms. And very distant, of course”.

Alexander speaks English, little bit of French, and German. He has one tattoo on his leg. It’s a childhood drawing done by his brother. However, the brother did not truly appreciate why Alexander got the tattoo, stating that he just had nothing better to do.

There is little known about actor’s personal life. In particular, some think that he had a romantic relationship with Evan Rachel Wood, after their mutual trip to Sweden. But that “relationship” was never confirmed; soon after, Alexander was spotted with his fellow actress from Straw Dogs, Kate Bosworth. Recently, Alexander’s father confirmed that the two are indeed dating.

I didn’t want to play the roles of college students with complicated inner world until my retirement. However, other kinds of roles were not offered to me in Sweden. In the States, it was even more difficult.

Even Bram Stoker, the author of “Dracula”, stated that the “blood-suckers” possess hypnotic likability. Sure enough, now-a-days, every other young girl in the world wants to invite Edward Cullen into her house, quench his thirst with her blood, and pet him on his head – since he is so sweet and well mannered, just like half of the vampires in “Twilight”. The vampires of the highly-rated series “True Blood” are not like that. Eric Northman is a tall blond who’s been living for a 1000 years, vampire and the owner of a night club in American “nowhere-land”, he drinks blood like water, fucks anyone he wants, and manipulates anyone who gets on his “radar”. Very few girls want to “pet his head”, most of them want to take his pants off. Not so much his pants, but more from a man who plays Eric – Alexander Skarsgård, the most popular Swedish actor of our time. Interestingly, most popular actor of previous generation, Alexander’s father, is Stellan Skarsgård (who besides Trier ’s “Dogville” and “Breaking the Waves”, has also played in Hollywood ’s “Mamma Mia!”, “Girl with a Dragon Tattoo”, and even in “Pirates of the Caribbean ”). It was his suggestion that got Alexander into the movie business, but it was also Stellan who supported him to leave it. “I was 13 when I played in my first movie – the producer was a friend of my dad. I didn’t really like it. So my father said: “You have to like what you do. If you don’t like it, do something else”. Now I understand that if at that time he forced me to be a movie actor, then I would have never had a career as one”. However, back then, at 13, Alexander “killed” it almost ruthlessly – the teenager was fanatical about architecture: “For days, I could just sit and draw houses and even full streets”. Later, he “abandoned” schooling all together in the preference of punk-concerts, drinking, and spending time at the soccer arenas – Skarsgård is a huge fan of soccer.

In those cases, the loving Soviet parents would sign up the sloven for military service, but Skarsgård, without much deliberation, signed up for the Navy service himself. “Actually, I am from a family of pacifists, and we weren’t looking forward to seeing any military actions. But, thank God, Swedish soldiers, as oppose to American or British ones, are not being sent to Iraq or Afghanistan. Thus, for me, the military service was a mean to prove myself. And, I have to tell you, there were a lot of tough guys, real killers. I was part of anti-terrorist unit, and the level of testosterone was very high in everyone’s blood; to the point where I felt a bit uncomfortable”.

Leaving the military after one-and-a-half years, the brave soldier-Swede, set course for a foreign country to England. At Leeds University, he studied English and literature for half a year. The Scandinavian Atlas (note: In Greek mythology, the Titan who supported the heavens on his shoulders), squared his shoulders and crossed the Atlantic to end up in Manhattan, where for another 6 months, he masters the art of acting in a theater course; and then, almost like out of habit, he drops everything and returns home to Stockholm. “In reality, back then, I started to realize that I wanted to act and make movies. However, there was a girl waiting for me at home. You know how it goes: she’s 18, I’m 21, we knew each other for 2 weeks before I left for the States. I have fantasized about her for half-a-year, talking to her on the phone every day. Sure enough, at the end, the relationship just didn’t happen”. On the other hand, upon returning to Sweden , Alexander finally returned to making movies.

The return of the prodigal son was triumphal – in three years he played 12 parts in movies and on TV. One problem, although the roles were that of a main character, it just didn’t feel right. “The movie industry in Sweden is small, thus, there was little to choose from in term of roles. I realized, that even when I hit 40, I will still be offered to play the roles of a college student who has trouble communicating with the outside world, and who dreams of a girl”. But the “big” movie industry wasn’t waiting for him with open arms ether. “I played the part of a model-idiot in 2001 Zoolander, but it was clear to me that I would always be in 499th place on the list of extras for small-budget horror movie”. But, to Alexander’s luck, he was not only the priest of Melpomene (note: Greek muse of Tragedy; an expression that describes actors), but a real soldier, and an authentic Viking. Those two qualities became very useful to HBO in 2007 in making the mini-series “Generation Kill” about the war in Iraq, and vampire saga “True Blood” – a romantic story, 95% of which was filled with sex and violence. In the first series, the producer needed a marine, and in the second, a thousand-year-old, but well “preserved” Viking. Of course, there wasn’t anyone better for ether of those roles. “In reality, none of the other actors knew about my military service. I thought it would be rude to show up on the set as a military veteran and tell everyone how to do things”. On the set of “True Blood”, however, there was no need to “hide” his Scandinavian roots. “It’s actually not very difficult to play the role of a vampire, the difficult part is not to over do it. There is one problem though – vampires don’t age, but I do; thus, I will not be able to play Eric Northman for the rest of my life; I guess the Botox can help to extend that time”.

For now, and without any “cosmetic” help, Skarsgård is a star of one of the most popular TV series in the world, sex-symbol and a man-of-mystery – after his break up with Kate Bosworth, there is nothing known about his personal life. “There are plenty of rumors about those I sleep with, and trust me, I am OK with it”.
