He is Sweden's hottest Hollywood star - but Joel Kinna's life has not always acted on the bright side. For ELLE he talks about his tough teenage, love, and his desire for children.
The compulsory question when you come back to the ELLE editorial team after an interview is always: What was he like? Seventeen journalist colleagues looking expectantly at you. They want all the pieces of the puzzle of life - the heart, the tears, the chipped that do not fit. The first thing I ask Joel Kinnaman when I met him in a bar 101 on hotel Anglais is what he thinks I will respond.
He is thinking not.
- Kind, he answers immediately, pulling a drag on the cigarette he was holding in his hand and blows out smoke.
I have read on the Joel Kinnaman. The word kind is conspicuous by its absence. He was a troublemaker in kindergarten, bullies at school, and a teenager who hung out in gangs and beaten, robbed and tested drugs already in the 13's. And now it is here that he smokes indoors during the interview, does not feel like that really nice.
The moment he stops the cigarette in his pocket.
- It is an electronic cigarette, battery-operated, he explains.
- Smoking without cancer. It is the latest. The liquid nicotine, smoke is steam. No tar, no carbon monoxide, no chemicals. It is as dangerous as an asthma inhaler. I ate as much nicotine gum that I got cramps in jaw and woke up with a headache, so this is much better.
He was half-lying on the sofa opposite. Black faded t-shirt, military green pants and canvas shoes. Occasionally tanned, moderately trained - so that as you look when you have your own PT and live in LA.
Why did you end up in trouble?
- I very much love from home. But I was a mischievous child, cross ... I think you have a set of genes that can be amplified by the environment. My pesky teens about power games. If I were the one who was the victim or the victim. It's tough growing up. I had the wrong friends, and their own needs that were not the best, as power demand. Because I felt powerless. When I was 16 I broke with the buddies who were heading in the wrong direction. It was hard. But necessary.
Have you worked there?
- Absolutely. I've grown up. Become a man. That is what is beautiful with acting, you can transform their negative experiences into something positive. It will be an asset.
Do you think sometimes about how it could have gone?
- Yes, I had not been particularly successful. I did not have anything else that I was good at.
Is that a scary thought?
- I'm very grateful that I did not give up.
Joel talks about his high school days. Then he saw his future is not as bright as the day, after acclaimed roles in Johan Falk films and television series, The Killing, a chafer on the operation fast cash, up to date with the fast cash two and a recording of the great movie Robocop. He wondered who he would become, and the stress was total when classmates began to look into the university. Of course he defected with a 40 percent absenteeism stamped on the score.
- I was not so good in school. I decided instead that I would travel for seven years. I wanted to see the world.
He started in Norway, worked at the factory, swept the roof and worked in a bar. Then he got a job as hotellbarchef in the Alps.
- It was one of my greatest acting performances when I sold in myself there.Very lies too. I was totally under qualified, but she did work interview was receptive to a little charm and I had a warm recommendation. In the beginning I was very rude to the guests, I had learned from Stockholm's restaurant world. I had not realized then that if you are nice to people, they are nice back. I was constantly stressed out and was just waiting to be caught, they would ask me to pack your bags and say "you can not this much." After a few months he traveled on to Thailand, Laos and Malaysia - alone.
- I hated being alone, always wanted to have buddies around me. I saw it as a weakness in myself so I decided that I had to pull away on my own.
Was it anxiety charged?
- I felt incredibly alone. But it was a good trip for me, very rewarding.
It was when he returned to Sweden to work together more money that his friend Gustaf Skarsgård gave him the idea to look into drama school.
- He talked so passionate about acting and I had always looked up to my sister Melinda, who played theater. I thought I should try. Gustaf helped me a lot before the application sample.
He did not get in.
- It felt insurmountable.
Eventually, he came into Scenstudion instead and eventually the Theater School in Malmö.
- It was an amazing feeling when I finally succeeded. I had the right place.
Why do you think you love to play?
- Human meetings is what I think is coolest in life. Meeting new people and play together. I was good at playing when I was little. I had imagination. The best thing I knew was when I found someone else who was good at playing, when together they created a world that is both believed. And did that world better. That's exactly what acting is all about.
Joel's mobile lights. He answers.
- Baby!
He laughs a little.
- I'm in an interview baby. No, They do not want a call from you, sorry. I'm being really rude, baby, I gotta hang up. Bye, baby.
He hangs up.
Who was it?
- It was my ... friend.
Your girlfriend? (actress Olivia Munn as he dating since year-end.)
- Yes, exactly.
How do you make love last?
- I give a lot of attention. Ringer, message ... skype as soon as possible. Skype is all long-distance relationship the rescue!
He says it's stressful to have love in LA, family and friends in Stockholm and work in different parts of the world. Then he landed here over a day since he has not had time to touch with anyone, just worked.
- I prioritize my career. It has its price. I feel inadequate. I am a rootless person and find it difficult to get the structure of existence. My suitcase is my security in life.
He lights up when he tells us that he is looking apartment in Södermalm and that he recognizes most facades when he sees them on the web.
- When can their city quite well. Stockholm is my zenpunkt.
He grew up in the South - Bitte mother is a psychotherapist, dad Steve is American who deserted during the Vietnam War - by three sisters: Sandra, Marit and half sister Melinda, the other two half-sisters also are Joel close.
- Although we do not have the same parents, we are like one big family.
During Joel's childhood the family traveled a lot.
- My parents invested all the money on trips, I had no Levi's or so. But I think that anything that increases one's understanding of the world is good. That not everyone has the same or as easily, such insights can never get enough of.
Do you long for your own family?
- Yes, I do. But it will ... someday. I long to have children ... I would like to live in Sweden then but I will not do. The family may be traveling with me.
How do you handle stress?
- I'm bad at it. I get nothing done. I have a laid-back personality. I think, for example, to go very slowly. When I was in Cuba, it was like coming home to where all go slowly. They have nothing to rush to, they have no market. When I was younger I lied to my friends and said I had done wrong to foot to go slow. You can either run or take a taxi, or you can go slow and enjoy life.
When are you at your best?
- When I'm with all my friends and everyone around me is happy. When I have the opportunity to share with you the good, I like to invite. To be out a bunch of the archipelago, eat breakfast together, bathe and drink wine in the evening. It is an ultimate existence.
What are you talking about with your best friends?
- Everything. Relationships, jobs, sometimes politics. We gossip, jokes, telling stories, making fun of ourselves. You have to have self-distance.
Do you have any vices?
- The general set. Sometimes it becomes too much of a good thing, but not much too much, I think.
How do you shop?
- I buy a lot of clothes. I have days when I high jump, then I can come home with a whole new wardrobe. I like the simple style, I'm not a hipster. I buy designer Whyred and Acne. Some Swedish brands is aimed more at an anemic man with sunken shoulders who drink tea with two hands. I have pretty broad shoulders so the clothes do not fit me. But pants are Swedish brands very good at.
Where in career do you see yourself right now?
- In the beginning, I hope. The next big goal is a position where I can start new projects, producing. I'm not that far from it. Then I select the team itself. And then both friends and family to be with.
The interview is over. I turn off the tape recorder and collect my papers. Just when I'm on my way out the question from Joel.
