Aussie indie electro legends Cut Copy have released a new video today for Free Your Mind and it features some sort of neo-Jesus character freeing the minds of people wherever he goes.

The track comes from the album of the sale now, which is out Friday 1 November, and features a robed wanderer having his feet bathed, playing invisible basketball with his disciples, appears to walk on water for a bit before baptising a maiden in a pool and then ends up in some form of orgy room before making out with a girl.

It’s not your Passion Of The Christ Jesus, but we’re sure there’s a few out there who have worshipped a similar character at some point in their life.

In a few short years Cut Copy have grown from a bedroom project to an international festival staple that never fails to leave thousands enraptured. Each release and tour has invited fans internationally one step closer into their world full of ecstatic peaks broken up by quiet moments of melancholy and beauty. Their vision is clearer than ever before on their fourth album, Free Your Mind, due out November 5 on Loma Vista/Modular. The follow-up to the Grammy-nominated Zonoscope was recorded in the band's hometown of Melbourne, Australia, and produced by Cut Copy frontman Dan Whitford. Eric Northman from True Blood) stars as a New Age cult leader making the rounds of his picturesque compound, where he plays a game of Duck, Duck, Goose, dabbles in some invisible basketball, and offers plenty of longing gazes into his followers’ eyes. If spiritual enlightenment means having flowing hair and six-pack abs like that, then sign us up for the next Kool-Aid party ASAP. Watch it below.

You know what I've never understood about people who get caught up in crazy cults? The person they drop everything in their lives to follow is usually incredibly creepy. What's the appeal?? Sure, I get that there's usually brainwashing and sometimes drug-laced beverages involved, but still. Now, if someone like, say, Alexander Skarsgard happened to be leading a cult, that would be a hot Swedish horse of a different color.

Which is why it made perfect sense for Australian band Cut Copy to cast Skarsgard as a Messiah-type figure in the video for their new single, "Free Your Mind." Skarsgard's cult leader is not your typical skeevy wild-eyed psycho -- oh, no. Sexy wild-haired psycho is more like it.

I can't quite tell what the Cult of Skarsgard is supposed to be all about, though being a member seems to require having electrodes attached to your head, beards and sex. But who the hell cares?? Skarsgard spends most of the video strutting around in extremely low-hanging pajama pants; when he's not doing that, he's either playing duck-duck-goose on people's heads, kissing chicks, peeing or running around in his underpants. So basically what I'm saying here is, you can't lose. See for yourself:

Boy, that one bearded dude got dissed, right? One second he's gettin' it on with that girl ... then Alexander Skarsgard walks by ... and she's all, Yeah, that was real nice but I should be going now. And Alexander Skarsgard is all, I will kiss you but then I must run around in my undperpants.

Dan Whitford Tells Us The Cool Story Of How A Whirlwind Bromance With Alexander Skarsgard Led To Him Starring In The New Cut Copy Video

We just got off the phone with Cut Copy frontman Dan Whitford and amidst a far-reaching discussion about the making of their new album, Free Your Mind, the best night club they've ever been to, and what you say when Tiesto tries to collaborate with you, the Melbourne based singer-songwriter-musician told us about the serendipitous sequence of events which led to Eric Northman Alexander Skarsgard starring as a cult leader in their new "Free Your Mind" clip.

Here's how Dan explains it: "Basically we did a show in Rio and Alex Skarsgard actually came down to the show and demanded to come backstage after. He wanted to see us because he wanted to tell us what a massive fan he was. He was telling us this story about how he was shooting a series called Generation Kill in the Kalahari Desert without a break for like four or five months and while he was there his one link back to home was listening to our second record "In Ghost Colours" on repeat. It just took him back to being in Stockholm and partying. The life he was missing out on was represented by that record. So he had this emotional attachment to that album and was a massive fan and he basically came backstage to tell us all this. We ended up hanging out and having this crazy night. The next day he introduced us to his family. He comes from a big family of actors, obviously his Dad's a massive actor, who were all there with him at the same time. We somehow became best buddies just from hanging out in this 24 hour period and said "if we're ever in the same place again let's hang out". We had such an awesome time.

So when we were thinking about making a video for this new record we thought we'd ask him and see if he would be interested in doing it. Like, no pressure, but if you were up for it that would be awesome. We sent him the song, he loved it and he said "I'm in, let's make this happen". It was a very organic thing. I guess like a lot of the stuff we've done it's via people we know or through friends. It was just amazing in this case because that friend happened to be this big shot Hollywood actor who people are quite fanatical about. He's got quite the set of abs on him. It's funny, towards the end of the day when all the staff were packing up, the ones that were left was this group of like six or seven different make up girls and hair stylists who found a reason to stick around. Everywhere he went he had this entourage of girls following him around just being like, "Skkkkaaaarrrrsssgggaarrrdd"".

"Free Your Mind" by Cut Copy is the story of a huge, charismatic cult leader, played by Alexander Skarsgård of HBO’s True Blood, who is loved by all but one man on the compound. Director Christopher Hill worked closely with the band on the concept for the video, which also ties into the over all marketing plan for the album. We talked to Christopher about the video, casting Alexander in the lead role, and the influences on the styling of the members of the cult.

Doug Klinger/IMVDb: Were you given complete freedom when coming up with the concept for this video?

Christopher Hill: Yes. I’ve worked with the Cut Copy guys a few times previously and know them quite well so they had total confidence in running with whatever I wanted to do. That said, we had a number of meetings over coffee, lunch, dinner, drinks, picnics etc to discuss various ideas, not only to do with the video, but the marketing campaign of the album as a whole. The idea of the new age cult seemed to make the most sense in regard to the themes of the album. Any restrictions on freedom were the usual budget and time. For example, Alexander could only fit in one day shooting between feature film commitments.

Doug: What were you looking for in the main character and how did Alexander get involved?

Christopher: As a cult leader, the main character needed to have a natural onscreen presence and charisma. It needed to be someone that people would naturally gravitate towards. When first talking to the band they had mentioned becoming good friends with Alexander the previous year whilst on tour and we joked about how great it would be to have him involved. As I finalized the concept for the video and seeing Alexander in a few recent films I started to think that he would actually be perfect for the role. After some initial hesitation from the band I convinced them that it was a matter of a simple email that he would either say yes or no to. It was a long shot but he emailed back straight away expressing interest and after reading my treatment / hearing the song. He was completely enthusiastic.

Doug: Do you think having a recognizable actor in that role adds to the power and importance to the character in the video?

Christopher: Definitely it does, because people have a familiarity and attachment to him already. The character has gravity because of his expertise as an actor, but this is multiplied by the fascination people have with Alexander himself. Actually, Alexander already has somewhat of a personal cult following so on one level the video’s concept is actually playing off that fact. Interestingly, Dan from the band told me that a friend of ours watched the video 4 times without knowing who Alexander Skarsgard was. He was fascinated by the ‘unknown actor’s amazing performance’.

Doug: Was there something in specific you were looking for in the other characters in the video?

Christopher: Yes, I wanted a variety of different people that had a unique look that might fit into the world of the cult. Innocence and loss of innocence were two things I generally looked for during casting. The three featured roles of assistant, love interest, and antagonist had to play off Alexander’s role in an almost contrasting way. The love interest had to be a mix of innocent and seductive. Seductive innocence? The Antagonist had to have inner tranquility and strength. He had to be the opposite of Alexander, but look like someone that could stand up to him. Alexander’s assistant would basically be like his mother and best friend as she would theoretically spend the most time with him. I wanted her to be older and more frail which was the obvious opposite of Alexander, but she needed a certain flare that would match Alexander in personality. I love the idea of these two just hanging out on a day to day basis and I can imagine a whole script based on their relationship.

Alexander Skarsgard jumps at the chance to star in Cut Copy's music video

WHEN actor Alexander Skarsgard was filming Iraq war miniseries Generation Kill in the Kalahari Desert five years ago he had one album to remind him of his nocturnal life back in Stockholm. It was Melbourne band Cut Copy's In Ghost Colours, which had just been released.
Two years ago, Skarsgard saw Cut Copy live when he was in Rio while they were touring their Zonoscope album.

"The promoter came in and said, 'There's a guy who wants to meet you, he's a big actor in Hollywood,' " Cut Copy's frontman Dan Whitford says.

"Then this seven-foot tall ripped Swedish dude comes through the door and tells us how much he loved us and how he listened to In Ghost Colours every night in the desert, and how he had a huge attachment to it. So we hung out after the show."

As well as Skarsgard apologising to Whitford ("I told him how obsessed my girlfriend is with him," the singer admits), it became a mutual lovefest.

"We became best friends for life, just from one night of hanging out," Whitford says.

When they were looking for someone to star in a six-minute, twisted video for the title track of their new album Free Your Mind they called their favourite shirt-dodging Swede.

"He got right into it, he picked out his wardrobe, he kept asking what his motivation was," Whitford says of the "crazy" clip, shot in LA.

Free Your Mind passed the Skarsgard test; Whitford admits much about the album harks back to In Ghost Colours, which reached No. 1 in Australia.

2011's Zonoscope was the most insular Cut Copy record, although it earned the band their first ARIA Award.

"Zonoscope was a conscious effort to go to a different place we hadn't been to before, maybe throw people off," Whitford admits. "We did to some degree, more so in this country than other places. But it's a lot of people's favourite Cut Copy record. But some people who were just wondering, OK where's Hearts On Fire or Lights and Music? We didn't want to be an act who just churns out the same material and rehash the hits we had a few years ago. We went somewhere else. The common thing between In Ghost Colours and this record is a sense of wanting to connect with people a bit more, Zonoscope was more about going into our own world and inviting people in if they were up for it. This album is a little more direct than Zonoscope.."

After touring Zonoscope for 18 months Whitford returned to Melbourne and was re-energised by an underground dance music scene.

"Little pockets of crazy parties would go all night and only the people in that scene knew about it," Whitford says. "It reminded me of that early acid house scene in the UK where the people had this sense of unity."

Whitford started watching documentaries about the UK's summer of love in the late `80s and rediscovered classic albums of the era like Primal Scream's Screamadelica.

The uplifting feel soon infiltrated the writing and recording of Free Your Mind.

"This record has a sense of celebrating that back to basics feel of what dance music is about, bringing people together and creating this sense of uplifting togetherness," he says.

Let Me Show You borrows from the K Klass UK house hit of the same name from 1993 ("In the spirit of acid house I just made it weird sounding and put it in the chorus") while the album has vocal samples and ambient interludes throughout.

"There was a theme of mind expansion, some psychic connection between people whether it's on the dancefloor or in life in general," Whitford says. "If you look at stuff like the KLF or DJ Shadow, they're record nerds like myself, and the way they put albums together wasn't just song after song, it was more a 3D record than a 2D record. But that uplifting, embracing coming-together-for-dance was a thread across the whole album."

A keen student of the history of dance music, Whitford remembers playing acid house as a teenager working in community radio. He thinks the new underground scene is a reaction to the generic version of dance music that has overtaken the mainstream.

"Dance music has gone off track a bit," Whitford says. "Old school house music doesn't come from Van Halen being played on a synthesiser. It was originally a real subculture - gay people, black people - minorities who embraced dance music and over time it became mainstream. To me that's what it's about, not about throwing beer bottles at the stage and musclebound dudes high firing and fist pumping. Although if they want to come to our shows I won't turn them away!"

Many Australians don't realise the scope of Cut Copy's popularity overseas, which stretches beyond the usual markets of the US, UK and Europe, where they regularly sell out headline shows.

"We played to 1000 people on a Monday night in Estonia," Whitford says. "You wonder how they even know our music, but the internet is such a powerful force of getting music to people all around the world. People who are fans of the kind of music we make are going to be able to hear us no matter where we are.

"It's changed everything, you don't necessarily need to have a song on radio or have a poster up, people find you on the internet. It gets your music to other countries. Our success has built and built, our fans are there because they like our music, not because they've heard one song on commercial radio. They're invested."

Cut Copy Talk Free Your Mind, Hanging Out With Alexander Skarsgard, & Not Pissing Off Kanye West

At this stage of their career, Cut Copy are well and truly a household name.

Launched into the international spotlight with their 2008 feel-good second album In Ghost Colours, the quartet of Dan Whitford, Tim Hoey, Mitchell Scott and Ben Browning successfully followed it up with the Grammy-nominated Zonoscope – a record that flawlessly combined tribal beats with Cut Copy’s breezy dance sound.

Three years on, guitarist/sampler Hoey gives Tone Deaf an insight into the process of making the band’s fourth album Free Your Mind, due out November 1.

“The beginning of Free Your Mind started out with this idea of making a new song every day,” explains Hoey.

“We’d start an idea, and by the end of a day’s work, we’d put it aside and start on something else the next day. So we did that for about two months, and by the end of it we had a good 60 or 70 ideas for songs.”

It begs the question, was having such a loose flow of ideas the inspiration for the title Free Your Mind?

“No, but that’s actually a good point,” continues Hoey. “Looking back on it now, you could certainly get that from the title.

“But where it came from for us was, we kinda noticed that Dan [Whitford, Cut Copy frontman] had this recurring lyric – ‘Free your mind’ – and that happened in three or four songs, and he didn’t really remember saying it.

“When we started, doing a new song every day, there was no concept of Free Your Mind, it was all about the process of trying something new.”

The record was produced by living legend Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, MGMT), and Hoey was very enthusiastic about the process.

“It was everything we could have hoped for. We were huge fans of his back catalogue, pretty much all the records he’s worked on,” Hoey admits.

“We really took a lot away from working with him … He was just so supportive of the artist. He was basically like, ‘I’m here for you guys. I’m going to show you some things, but at the end of the day, I want to do what makes you happy,’ so it was a very collaborative process.”

The first two singles from Free Your Mind have been the title track – which has the traditional weird and wavy Cut Copy sound – and ‘Let Me Show You’, with its deep house/trance vibe.

“The idea of releasing those two songs first certainly gave an indication of the themes of the record and the musical references, especially the early ‘90s house scene in Chicago, and the acid house scene in the UK,’ says Hoey. “That’s an era of music we’ve always held very dear to our hearts.

“But there’s also some right turns that people wouldn’t expect hearing,” he continues. “There’s a few songs on there that I’m super proud of, some areas we’ve never explored before that might take people by surprise.”

The recent video for ‘Free Your Mind’ – featuring True Blood hunk Alexander Skarsgard as an imaginary-basketball-winning, lover-drowning cult leader – was also an interesting move for the band.

“We actually met Alexander about two years ago when we were touring Zonoscope in Rio,” Hoey recalls. “We just stayed in contact over the years and when Chris Hill, the director of the video, was putting together the treatment, he said ‘We should ask Alexander, he’d be perfect for this’.

“We didn’t want to exploit our friendship, we knew he was really busy, so we just sent him the song and the treatment. But he got back to us, said that he loved it and wanted to be a part of it. “

“To see how seriously he took it, and how hard he worked on the role was amazing, because it was about a 17-hour shoot, and he did it purely for the love”

In the lead up to the release, the band took the unique approach of cutting 12-inch singles live, and handing them out to attendees of the Pitchfork Festival. As Hoey reveals, it was another way for Cut Copy to keep things interesting.

“Last year, when we were making the record, we had this idea of releasing music to the world differently to how we have in the past. After working so long and hard on a record, it’s such an anti-climax to just put it up on YouTube and Soundcloud, and then people go listen to it and that’s it.

“The Pitchfork idea, we actually knew this guy in Seattle who had a record cutting machine, so he just went to the festival and set up his equipment. People actually had to go up to him and ask what was going on, and he’d say, ‘Well, we’re pressing the new Cut Copy single, do you want one?’”

“We just really liked the idea that the only way this song existed was through the 120 people that actually had these pieces of vinyl. They were always going to put it online, but we like the romantic idea of a reward for people actively seeking out music.”

There were also billboards put up in six different locations, sporting the title Free Your Mind.

“It was the same with the billboards,” says Hoey. “It was all about people making this journey to a location, and they were rewarded, not only through listening to the song, but also through sharing the experience with other people.

“Billboards are an outdated model of advertising, so I thought it’d be cool to make these billboards for remote areas around the world, places you actually had to make the journey to.”

However, billboards weren’t the original idea…

“The hilarious thing was, when we were putting the idea together for this campaign, we were going to strobe the Free Your Mind text on various monuments around the world,” laughs Hoey.

“And then Kanye released his projections around the world, we couldn’t believe it. So we had to completely scrap that idea because of the Kanye thing.”

So let’s talk about the video for the album’s first single, also titled “Free Your Mind.” How’d you manage to bag Alexander Skarsgard for it?

We were really lucky. We met him in Brazil three years ago. We were playing there, and he’s a fan. We didn’t know that. We were playing and just saw this dude right upfront going crazy over our songs, and afterwards we wanted to meet him. He came backstage, and we ended up hanging out. We went to some house party in Rio and ended up talking about music and film all night. Then fast-forward two years later, and we’re making the first video for this album and the director said, “Oh, you know, you guys are friends with Skarsgard, so why don’t you ask him if he will be in the video?” And we thought there was no way he’d be able to do it. But we asked him and he was really up for it. We went to L.A. to shoot it, and he had a day off to do it. We did it in one day.

And, of course, because he’s Alexander Skarsgard, he had to get naked for it. Was that his idea or the director’s?

I think he was happy to do whatever was needed, and I think he and the director sort of collaborated on what would go where and how he would dress. He’s got that six pack and everything. He’s got to put it to use.
