Vikings Season 4 Episode 2 Kill The Queen
Personal Recap:
Before I begin with the second Episode, I have to add to my Episode 1 recap, that it was about time, that Björn takes his time of in the woods. He wanted it already in Season 2, but his stepfather at the time, wouldn’t let him go. He needs to grow up, but never got the chance, to experience if he is capable of surviving alone. As good as a fighter he is, there had always be someone to protect him. Ok, now let’s begin with the second episode.
Great, that shows how much I’m into this show. I see Björn struggling through the snow, and immediately start freezing and shivering. LOL Björns struggle is amazingly done. It really makes me speechless.
I LOVE Ragnar’s reaction as the dogs start barking. Like he knew, Floki would escape eventually. It was just a matter of time.
The “hunt” for Floki is amazingly shot. It says a lot, that as it looks to me, Ragnar put Ubbe in charge. Is he grooming him to be the leader one day? Maybe if Ragnar had the chance to show Björn how it’s done from that age, as Ubbe is, he may be turned out different? But anyhow Björn has a totally different personality. Also Björn grew up as a farmer’s son, who became Earl and King. The “little ones” grow up with Earl and King Ragnar. That is a totally different upbringing.
How desperate Floki has to be hiding under water. He knows he can’t go on forever. He has to be weak from his time in chains. A miracle that he made it so far anyway. He just puts everything on one card and hopes for the best. Or for the mercy of the Gods.
With Ragnar visiting Helga and bringing her that sack of apples, it shows again, that Ragnar didn’t meant to punish Floki. He cares, and knows, that without Floki, Helga and Angbroda won’t be able to survive the winter. Ragnar clearly doesn’t want to be responsible for that. And I guess, he wants to show Helga, that he’s not angry with her, but understands her actions. And that as long as Floki is gone, no matter if forever or not, she won’t have to worry. Cause he’ll look out for her. Who else should? All in all, Helga has nobody else than Floki. She’s lost without him. As I think he is without her. Helga is grounding Floki as much as that is possible with a personality like he has.
In some way, I guess Ragnar is right, that “Floki only loves himself.” But I also think it’s just a huge misunderstand between the two of them. Ragnar can’t fully understand why Floki did what he did. And Floki just can’t understand how important Athelstan was for Ragnar. Not because he was a Christian but because their curiosity for the world connected them. Ragnar had nobody else than him. Ragnar knows, the world is changing, which Floki doesn’t realize and don’t wanna realize. All that matters to Floki in the end are the wills of the Gods.
In the beginning I still believe, that Ragnar didn’t meant to punish Floki. At least in that way, as he finally did. Maybe he would’ve banned him from Kattegat or something. But as he is sitting outside and staring on that pole where Floki was chained, I think he made the decision, that Floki has to suffer and die. But he also has to consider what will become of Helga if he kills Floki. Nothing of Flokis actions is Helga’s fault. But Ragnar would also punish Helga and Angbroda by killing Floki. They don’t deserve it.
Maybe it’s some way of punishment for Floki also being captured by “mere children” as Ragnar puts it. You’re stupid by trying to escape, but what should I expect from someone who gets caught by kids. Something like that, maybe.
I understand both Ragnar’s and Aslaug’s arguments. For Ragnar, Athelstan was way more than just a Christian. He was one of his best friends. And someone who understood him and his ambitions. But Aslaug is right also. Even if Ragnar made Athelstan a free man, he wasn’t nothing more than a Christian, and a Viking shouldn’t be punished as hard as Floki is. I understand that Ragnar needed to get off his anger and hit her, and I guess also because he is still angry with her, that she cheated on him with Harbard. But that doesn’t make it right.
From my opinion, Ragnar really wanted to let Floki rot in that cave, until he went to Helga and dug the grave for Angbroda. Can someone hand me a tissue by the way?! Ragnar knows how it feels, losing a daughter. From now on Helga and Floki only have each other. And I think Helga needs Floki more than ever.
I don’t even wanna start thinking too much about Flokis torture. But it’ll be interesting if he’ll has to suffer psychological wise in the long term.
Wessex/ Mercia: Again, we have a son stepping over his father. As Björn stepped in for Ragnar in episode one, now Aethlwolf is taking charge over his father. BAD decision!!!!! I have the feeling, Ecbert never wanted his son to be a leader, because he knows, Aethlwolf is such a disappointment for him in every case. For me it looks like, Aethlwolf acted on his own, without filling his father in about his plans. Or consciously acting against his father’s own plans.
The more this storyline goes on, the more boring it becomes on one hand. On the other hand, it’s kinda fun watching how Aethlwolf is stepping up and Ecbert seems to be pretty annoyed but also confused about it.
I think, the Ecbert / Judith angle can develop into something interesting. Judith isn’t as conservative as some other women at that time. “I would never DREAM to force you……” Well, but that doesn’t mean, that Ecbert doesn’t want Judith in his bed at all. Judith has a pretty good understanding of Ecbert. She knows better than to underestimate him, but I also think she kinda knows how to push his buttons. As he does how to push hers. After all, she spends more time with him, than with her husband. With whom she’s just still together, because by Christian rights, she can’t divorce him. Oh, how I love my pagans.
I love Judith’s development. She really stands up for herself. Well, after what she’s been through, she maybe thinks like: “Well, what else could he do to me?” And with Athelstan dead, I believe Ecbert needs her.
I don’t know what to think about our new monk in town Potentius. Right now, I find him a little annoying.
Ok, what don’t I understand here? Why shall her own men kill Kwentrieth? Because it’s better for Mercia having her dead, than captured? Did I miss something? I have to admit, at least in this fight scene in Mercia, Aethlwolf is really growing on me.
Paris: I never thought Rollo has such a good understanding about tactics. I always just saw this fierce berserk warrior in him. I hate his new hairstyle by the way, as much as I hate Count Odo. Can’t we lock him up in his dungeons and let him rot? I feel sorry for Rollo. He just wants to fit in, and trying to make It easier for Gisla. And all she’s doing is laughing. Poor Rollo. If he already regrets staying in Paris? Well, he lost the opportunity to go back home, as he killed all the others.
I find it difficult to follow the whole Paris angle, except Rollo so far. Maybe as the season goes on, it’ll get more interesting, but right now, I really can’t enjoy this whole conspiracy angle around Count Odo.
