I'd like to think they're progressive, too, but what really stumps me is that several of the women had visible injuries from Perry's attack on Celeste. Why not just show the bruises on your face to the cops and say "he beat the crap out of me and my friends, his death was an accident"? It was obvious that Bonnie wasn't trying to kill him, she just wanted him to stop hurting her friends. Lying about it makes me think something else is going on, and I hope they play on that in S2.
I would like to see them take the WOC factor into account, too. Let's be honest - a young, black woman and her biracial daughter living in a very white, very wealthy enclave are going to have some stories about racial micro-aggressions, if not blatant racism. I liked that it wasn't a factor in S1 because it was a limited series and it didn't really matter for the character or the overall story. Now that they're going to produce at least one more season, I want to see the writers give Bonnie as much depth as they gave Renata (another supporting role).
It was a very very white series and book. They spent Season 1 uncovering the subtleties of abuse of women, regardless of class, precedent setting for 'metoo'. It would be nice for Season 2 to focus more on Bonnie living in a rich white enclave. Season 1's rich white women were written a bit too color-blind to be believable. For that reason, I don't really go with the reasoning that the women covered up to 'protect' Bonnie. I didn't notice that they ever thought about or wanted to get to know Bonnie much at all.
