The 2016 Academy Award nominations have just been revealed!

Lots of controversy, and tweets, #OscarsSoWhite, again this year about the lack of diversity in the nominations. I'm sure Chris Rock won't let it go unnoticed during the event, however.

The Oscars released a statement in response and I thought it was a total cop out. Beasts of No Nation has been in my queue since it was released on Netflix, but I've heard nothing but incredibly positive things about Idris Elba's performance. Lack of diversity in nominees is a HUGE problem in Hollywood.

I think the Oscars are trying to hold on to the "good 'ol boys" club as long as they possibly can. Viola Davis made an excellent point at the Emmys - opportunity is key. But there were plenty of films released this year with diverse casts that received critical acclaim, but no Oscar nominations. So the lack of opportunity must be within the Oscar voting process itself. And the fact that they have no ideas,for how to "fix" the problem is really sad.

The Oscars used to represent popular films. At some point, they switched over to more art house films and the popularity component switched to popularity within the industry itself. But even that isn't a good excuse for the lack of diversity - F Gary Gray is a respected director, Idris Elba is a respected actor, Creed is about a black man, etc.

Perhaps they need to revamp the entire Oscar voting process - change up who can vote, criteria for categories, etc. (I give Sly a pass, because I think he's basically receiving an "honorary" Oscar for a lengthy career.) But if the Oscars want to remain relevant, they need to be representative of the demographics of movie goers. I don't know how they justify awarding films that were released in 2 theaters, but not films that had diverse casts, excellent writing, excellent acting, excellent directing and were wide-releases.

The Oscars have become too elitist, very inside themselves. Maybe because they are so intent on showing how movies are 'high art', they are leaving out the very films that best represent movie-making, and part of that result includes leaving out movies on racial and cultural diversity.

I like the Oscars best when I tune in and am excited that the type of movies that only Hollywood can make are the major players, the ones a lot of people have seen and feel like they have a stake in wanting to win--The highest quality big budget films with well-developed characters and visuals. Most years now I feel like I'm either watching the British Film Awards or the Independent Spirit Awards. There are several movies that are nominated this year that would be great BAFTA and Indy Spirit award winners. But I get more excited when the Oscars focus on the ones lots of us have seen, like The Martian, The Revenant, Mad Max, the movies with a larger scope.

I don't quite get how Noomi Rapace regards herself as some avant garde fashionista hanging with progressive artists, but then constantly wears vanity furs. She does it all the time.

It's a major turn-off for me, killing animals only for vanity.

I know! What would make more of a statement than nominating Straight Outta Compton for Best Movie? Represents the best in movie-making, would be a huge diversity win for the Academy and bring some life back to the awards.  That's what I can't get my head around - there are some really easy ways for the Academy to make themselves more relevant, but it's like they're too far up each other's asses to admit something needs to change.

I don't necessarily agree that a certain number of awards should be for diverse nominees - quotas aren't always fair or representative. There may not legitimately be a "great" diverse option.  I do think the studios need to start taking on more diverse stories.  If every single studio is making 50 great stories with diverse casts and crews, the pool of nominees will automatically change to reflect that.

No one was crying out loud injustice when Lupita What's her name won the Oscar for 10 minutes of crying and like 3 lines in whole movie. Alejandro Inarritu is Mexican who is getting nominations and awards left and right, why? Cause he makes damn good movies. Make a great movie, put up a great performance and it is notices - Viola Davis, Octavia Spenser, Monique, Forest Whitaker... This whole thing seems to me like bulling its way to awards.

Oh and Oscars are exclusive club, that's why they are Oscars.

But for me #OscarsSoWhite isn't about bullying one's way to get a nomination. I don't think it should be looked at as separate issue from both Hollywood's well documented history of problems with gender and diversity issues and America's racial/gender history. I've heard this: maybe they weren't good enough performances. But that's not entirely the problem, it's not just performance quality, nor even casting. It's hiring from top to bottom in Hollywood. I'm not going to give them a pass because Inarritu and del Toro get work. Or that they've had a couple of women as studio heads.
I know that many people don't look at in a broader context. HW is supposed to be escapism and dealing with political issues in HW isn't escapist for people. And because they're not aware of the relevant history. And I understand that.
It's just not something I do anymore.

PurpleShadow - your comments are the reason why I believe changing the Academy's membership demographics isn't a solution. It's putting a band aid on a scratch. A good performance should transcend gender and race, and many minorities are finding good roles/projects in the industry.

But Em's point is relevant too - #OscarsSoWhite shouldn't not be about bullying one's way to a nomination. It should serve as a "spotlight" on systemic problems. It's hugely problematic when a movie's writer (sometimes), casting director, producers, directors, financers, studio execs, etc all believe that a movie won't sell tickets unless the entire cast is white and male. And it's a huge problem when movie goers won't buy tickets unless the movie is full of guns, explosions, random sex, white men and random sidekicks.  The actors and directors PS noted are the exception, not the rule.  If you don't think that's true, look at the collective fuss the internet threw when Hermione was cast as a black actress. Despite JK Rowling's statement that she didn't know write Hermione as white, people still were outraged.  This hashtag should be used to raise social awareness...not to get a pretty paperweight.

A good script is colorbind. A relevant script has a diverse cast - men, women, white, non-white, Christian/Jewish/Muslim, short, tall, etc etc. A good actor will make you see the performance, not their skin color.

Not really certain, it almost looks like separate pieces.....whatever it is...it's hideous.
