Speaking of RoboCop, if you’re willing to count the iconic cyborg police officer as a superhero (which I would, at a push, seeing as he’s had his own Marvel Comics series), then Joel Kinnaman qualifies for inclusion on this list too. He starred in the 2014 reboot of the character, taking the title role and not doing too badly in it.

Now, he’s nabbed a role as Rick Flagg in Warner Bros/DC Entertainment’s upcoming Suicide Squad movie. Unlike most Squad members, Flagg isn’t a villain. He’s all hero: a respected army general tasked with keeping the team in check and leading them into battle against even bigger nasties.

Going forward, it seems far more likely that we’ll see Kinnaman reprising Flagg than RoboCop. The RoboCop sequel plans aren’t dead, but Warner Bros are surely already plotting ways to weave Kinnaman into their wider universe of DC movies post-Sucide Squad.

It's just a Swedish female actor who has previously won an Oscar. Namely, Ingrid Bergman, who managed the feat three times, the last of which was 47 years ago.

But Alicia Vika Flinders father Svante Vikander said earlier that it is hard work behind the success.

- It's been step by step. For me it does not feel this suddenly. She has worked tremendously hard. 15-18 hours per day, and she has not had a normal weekend in several years. House of Cards returned for a fourth season this weekend and one new player was getting quite a bit of attention. Swedish-American actor Joel Kinnaman joined the show as “snot-nosed pretty boy” Governor Will Conway. The character is introduced as both a challenger and a foil to Frank Underwood. He’s a young, handsome, family man with a spotless record and a finger on the pulse of America’s youth.

If Joel Kinnaman looked vaguely familiar to you, it’s probably because he’s popped up on a Netflix Original before: The Killing. Since breaking out of his native Sweden, Kinnaman has been positioned as a rugged new action star with serious acting chops (and if you’re wondering how he can nail that American accent so well, it’s because his dad is a Yank and he was educated at an English-language school). Kinnaman is poised to have a big breakout year. He’s also appearing in the new Terence Malick film Knight of Cups and will play the leading “good guy” in this summer’s Suicide Squad.

The Killing (2011 – 2014)
The Killing pitched itself as AMC’s bold reinvention of the crime thriller. It had a slick style, a cool Danish source, and a bewitching tagline: “Who killed Rosie Larson?” Joel Kinnaman and Mireille Enos co-starred on the series as a duo of detectives who find themselves haunted by the death of Larson and the ensuing mess. The show hooked viewers in its first season, but upset many with its “twist” ending in the first season. After three seasons, AMC dropped the unfinished show, but Netflix picked up the series for its fourth and final season. So, yeah, Kinnaman and Netflix go way back. [Watch The Killing on Netflix]

RoboCop (2014)
Every up-and-coming actor in Hollywood wants their own franchise and nowadays, that translates as “reboot franchise.” Two years ago, Kinnaman was being primed for glory as the new millennium’s RoboCop. The actor starred opposite Abbie Cornish in the reboot, but the film failed to connect with audiences. Still, it gave the Swedish actor the chance to prove that he looks good carrying a gun onscreen. Run All Night (2015)
Kinnaman solidified his ascent into the ranks of Hollywood action heroes when he appeared in last year’s violent thriller Run All Night. Kinnaman plays a retired boxer who gets in over his head when he witnesses a shootout between Albanian drug pins and a gangster’s son. To save himself, he reaches out to his mob enforcer dad, played by Liam “Taken” Neeson for help. House of Cards Season 4 (2016)
Kinnaman dropped his usual tough guy edge and adopted an all-American facade to play the smooth and charming political upstart Will Conway in this season of House of Cards. Conway is the flip side of Underwood’s coin, and while he seems transparent and squeaky clean, is just as shrewd a political operator as Frank is. [Watch House of Cards on Netflix]

Suicide Squad (2016)
Joel Kinnaman’s biggest play for fame will come later this summer, when he appears as the “moral anchor” Rick Flag in Warner Bros. Studio’s splashy comic book flick Suicide Squad. Sex appeal, youth, and family are all things missing from the life of Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) in House of Cards' fourth season. Sure, Underwood has been vocal throughout the series about not wanting kids, but the concoction of all three must sting when when rival Will Conway (Joel Kinnaman) steps onto the scene in the fourth season of the Netflix political drama as a new and formidable opponent in Frank's quest to regain the White House.

Conway has the token wife named Hannah (Dominique McElligott), he maneuvers his way into the lives of young voters with viral videos, social media and selfies, and he prances in the spotlight by landing magazine features. Underwood's new nemesis challenges Frank, who realizes he may not actually be holding all the cards. what does Kinnaman think Underwood envies most about Conway? "His youth," Kinnaman tells The Hollywood Reporter days after the release of season four.

Kinnaman's return to TV, following his breakout role on The Killing, comes as the Swedish native prepares for the release of one of his biggest film projects yet: Suicide Squad. In the film, which hits theaters in August, Kinnaman plays military officer Rick Flag alongside a cast that includes Will Smith, Jared Leto and Margot Robbie, among others.

Kinnaman spoke with THR about why he was "concerned" about signing on for House of Cards after Suicide Squad, "sparring match" scenes with Spacey and a fifth season encore.


Will is about making videos, taking selfies, and using social media to appeal to his voters. How do you think his character reflects the current presidential candidates in the real life election where they're active on Twitter and Snapchat?

This election is just crazy, more unpredictable than anyone could have imagined. What we're portraying in this show with social media playing a bigger part to appeal to a younger demographic in the way he's promoting himself and what they both have in common is what previously kind of was perceived as something that was beneath a presidential candidacy. I think this presidential campaign we're seeing especially on the Republican side, there's very few things left that we ever thought we were going to see in a presidential election. After we seen a presidential candidate implying how big his dick is, I think there's not much left for shock value.





Do you think there are parallels with your character and any of the candidates? Or any other characters?

I think there are more parallels with Donald Trump and [former Prime Minister of Italy] Silvio Berlusconi than anyone else. He's just his own entity because he's just a reality star that's now a presidential candidate. In the ways that Will is using social media, I mean all the candidates use Twitter, but Trump uses it more.

Your addition to the show was pretty tight-lipped. What were the logistics to you joining the series?

It's like anything when you go into a project, you have to follow the lead of the production and the publicity side of that and how they want to promote it. As many things as I've done before, you go into it and you keep it quiet and under wraps and sort of leak the information when everybody feels it's the right timing. It was an amazing experience with Kevin, and Robin [Wright] and particularly Beau Willimon who I just think is a brilliant, brilliant man. I just had a lot of fun working with the material and also coming to a set and a creative space where there were some pages that we got, but then it was all a creative process that I was invited to participate in and help create the character and give input.

How did Beau bring you on to do the show?

He called my people up and asked if I wanted to be a part of it. Then we started talking about it and I made the decision to join.

What drew you to the role and to join the series?

I loved the show. I think it's one of the best shows on television, if not the best, and I was a real fan of it, but it was definitely the character and the role. You know there are a lot of roles on phenomenal TV shows that I wouldn't want to do anyway, but this was something that I thought was special and it was an opportunity to play with Kevin. It was a very fun character.


What scenes were your favorite to film?

I really enjoyed the scenes I had with Kevin. We had, during the Democratic Convention and the scenes we had in this little room -- that was a lot of fun. Even though they would get spaced out over a whole episode it came down to a 15-page scene that we shot continuously. It was like we were doing a little mini-TV play, just me and him in that room. He's such an amazing actor and this character is something he completely embodies. It was like a sparring match and I think we both really enjoyed ourselves in that.

Where do you hope Will goes in season five?

We'll just have to find out. I mean I have a contract for a few episodes, but we'll see what happens.

What is the draw for mostly film actors to join a series like this?

That divide that existed before is pretty much eradicated and much of the quality writing that's done now is in TV. The daunting thing about doing TV is you're starting a new series where you might end up doing six seasons or something and that's not something many people want to do to be locked in like that. But going in and doing one season of a show pretty much takes the same amount of time as doing a big-budget film, like six months. And just the opportunity to create a really complicated character is even greater on a TV show when you have a 13-episode arc and you can really make something interesting and special. And I think these formats like True Detective and Fargo where the show goes on but the cast reboots, those are really attractive. The writing is very good and you go in and get to do a very interesting character and a well-written show. It's almost like in Sweden where I grew up, it's always been a bounce back and forth between the theater and film and TV. You go back to the theater to reconnect with your craft and just doing more complicated stuff that's a little bit more demanding. It's a healthy thing to go back and forth between the mediums where it demands something different from you. That's something I'll definitely be doing, going back back and forth between film and TV.


Did production for Suicide Squad interfere at all?

We were able to work it out... I was promised five weeks in between productions, but then that shrunk to like six days or something so it was really jumping from one to the next. I was a little concerned right when I started out cause I was pretty drained after Suicide Squad and I had done a movie just before that as well so I was coming off of eight months of shooting very intense stuff. So I was a little concerned, "Would I have time to recharge my batteries?" But when I came into House of Cards; it was just the writing was so good. It just fits well into your mouth and it's so fun to rehearse it. It was one of those things where it didn't take any energy working on it I actually got energy from digging into the material. I just found myself at home or in my hotel room rehearsing and just truly enjoying myself. And it's been a while where the text has been so good and it really made me want to go back to the stage. That was the big feeling, my takeaway after working on House of Cards. It really made me want to go back to theater.

Well, Beau's reportedly working on a play. Are you going to join him?

We actually spoke about it and I would love that. He's one of the best writers in this country and he really has an amazing sense of both story and dialog and character. He's a stone cold genius that guy.

You only had a six-day break between Suicide Squad and House of Cards. How did you celebrate when both were wrapped?

I went back to Sweden to see my family and then I went back to Cuba.

The end of this season, after the story comes out about Frank, Will is convinced he'll be the next president and tells his wife she's going to be the next first lady. And then after that, Frank announces total war. Do you see a world where he would recruit the likes of the Suicide Squad?

(Laughs.) Yeah, I'm sure he'd be open to that.

Could the Suicide Squad take him down?

Yeah, f--- it Rick Flag could take Underwood down without a doubt. Hell yeah.

Because Will Conway can't.

Yeah, exactly. Well, we'll see about that, we'll see about that...

Who's more powerful Frank and Claire or the Suicide Squad?

Joel Kinnaman is no stranger to life in the limelight. Taking part in a television series at age 10, the Stockholm native gradually became more interested in the industry thanks to influence from friends, family, and some acting school guidance. It was after a shift from Sweden to the States that Kinnaman really began to hit it big.

"Even though there’s a lot more competition, there’s more opportunities here," Joel told Maxim. "There’s a much wider range of stories that are getting told. So when the thought kind of crossed me that there was an opportunity to go to the States and give it a try, you realize that many of the best professionals come to work and come to play. I just feel really fortunate to get to play with people here."

Fresh off a breakout role on AMC's The Killing, Joel is up for another challenge as he goes head-to-head with fictional President Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) on the fourth season of House of Cards. His role as the charming and youthful Republican candidate Will Conway takes charge in the intense political drama as a man unafraid of pissing off POTUS, using the various arts of social media to lay his personal life on the table in order to earn the public's vote. But despite their tactical campaign approaches, Conway isn't far off from being just as maniacal as the man in the White House.

"On the surface, I think there’s a lot that separates them," Kinnaman said of his character and Spacey's. "Conway just looks like he’s got everything, the whole package: beautiful wife, two kids and a war hero that goes into politics that just seems like an idealist. And then when we get deeper into the season, we find out that they’re actually more similar than we thought in the beginning, and they’re actually two sides of the same coin. They’re both real political predators that are willing to do pretty much anything to get the power they’re after, and that's pretty cool."

With the Netflix series well underway (with rave reviews from critics), the 36-year old actor has been busy gearing up for quite possibly the largest film role of his career as DC's Suicide Squad prepares for a massive opening this August. We'll see Kinnaman take on the role of military operative Rick Flagg opposite the likes of Margot Robbie and Will Smith, it's a character he hopes to convey on-screen in the most authentic way possible.

"Flagg is one of these guys who has been in ever different kind of special operations unit there is," Kinnaman told Maxim. "He’s run with the SEALs, with Delta Force, with everyone. And most of his friends have been killed, and he’s seen a lot of them be killed, and he has a lot of dark experiences in him that he’s got to live with. I got to meet and train with some very high-level tier 1 military operators and my ambition was to do them justice, and I feel like I represented their experiences, and everything they’ve experienced, and how someone would carry themselves having done that. It became about wanting them to identify with what I was doing more than the history of the comic book character. But by doing that, I probably achieved both."

Joel also spoke to Maxim about today's political campaign, a little bit of golfing, and who would win between Frank Underwood and Rick Flagg.

Who would win in a battle between Frank Underwood and Rick Flagg?
Well, if it was a hand-to-hand battle, I think Frank would be shit out of luck. But if it was a political showdown or some kind of battle of the minds, I think that’d be tough for Rick, because Frank is one devious motherfucker.

What’s something on your bucket list that you've yet to do?
I want to try a wing suit. But I don’t want to do it by some mountains or some crazy shit like that, I want to do it by flat land just to get the feeling of how it is. I wanna fly.

Are there comparisons between this season of House of Cards and today's political campaign?
I think there’s a lot. I think the current presidential campaign sticks out just because it’s stooped so low where candidates are standing on stage implying how big their dick is. The bar is set so low in that respect, and with the campaign that’s on the show, it's is actually a little bit more respectable, even with the whole aspect of surveillance, and how these engines are being used, and how that meta data that is being gathered is being used to sway the voters and helping the campaigns to target their voters in a more effective way. That overreach is coming into play.

If you ever have any downtime, what do you usually find yourself doing?
I have a ton of hobbies. I love surfing and kick boxing, and I just started playing golf six months ago - now I’m obsessed with it.

So what's next for you?
I’ve got a couple of things that I’m looking at, but I haven’t made up my mind just yet. I’m looking to do something very different. I feel like I’ve done a lot of alpha males in different shapes and forms, so I want to do something different. I really want to switch it up.

Sweden-born actor Joel Kinnaman has been living in the United States for six years now and he’s only now just starting to adjust. “It’s a difficult thing when you leave your home country and come to a place and start playing characters that come from a different place,” Kinnaman, 36, says. “It takes a while to find the personalities and meet the people that you base your characters on.”

Kinnaman broke out as scruffy detective Stephen Holder on AMC’s “The Killing” in 2011, and anchored the “RoboCop” reboot in 2014 as the titular cyborg. But recently, he’s been trying his hand at a more cerebral role as Will Conway, the Republican presidential candidate on the fourth season of “House of Cards.” Kinnaman’s character comes in halfway through the season and gives Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) a run for his money in the show’s cunning power-play maneuvers.

Kinnaman spoke with the Journal this week about his role in “House of Cards” and the upcoming “Suicide Squad” film, where he plays Rick Flag alongside Jared Leto, Margot Robbie and Will Smith.

Below, an edited transcript:

What’s it like playing an adversary to Frank Underwood?

It’s real fun to play with Kevin. He’s a stone-cold killer. [He’s] so in that character and having so much fun with it. It’s like he always has a cocktail in his hand, leaning on a piano somewhere. He’s super smooth with it.

Will felt like a different breed of people who typically get under Frank’s skin. Was it unique?

That’s what really drew me to the part. It was an opponent he hadn’t faced before. Someone who was formidable, but a different kind of threat. But in many ways, I think they’re two sides of the same coin. They have a real ruthlessness to them. You get the feeling that they will do anything to get the power they are after.

Is Will more subtle about it?

The people in Will’s world are finding out that he has this cold side to him. The same way great actors exploit their true emotions, I think the great politicians do the same thing. They have something that’s very sincere and it draws people to them. They take that little piece of sincerity and they run with it. They exploit it. That becomes their brand.

When you were shooting this season, were the cast and creators conscious of the real election?

It’s funny, when you’re doing a show like “House of Cards,” that goes far in their expectation of the audience to follow them. But then when you’re watching the election on TV, it feels like fiction is more believable than the reality that’s playing out in front of us.

The last thing we hear from Frank is that “We don’t submit to terror, we make terror.” What do you think of that line?

I remember reading that last episode and when [Robin Wright‘s character, Claire Underwood] looks at him and they both look into the camera, I was like “Ahhhh!” I was completely geeking out as a fan. I loved it.

Is this role pretty different for you?

Yeah. I’ve played more of the scruffy, damaged, working-class guys in the U.S. I’ve lived in the States for six years now. I feel like my personal language has caught up, so I can believe myself in a character that has a more advanced language. Initially when I came to the States, it was easier to play characters that had a more limited vocabulary or more of a rough way of expressing themselves. It was easier for me to identify with those characters, language-wise.

If I get propositioned for a role for a Swedish character, than I have so many different ideas in my head from growing up, memories of people and how they talk, where they fit into the economic spectra. It took a while to catch up with that understanding of society in the U.S. Now, I’ve reached a point where I can start reaching for these more eloquent characters.

When did you realize this was happening?

Maybe, like, a year and a half ago. I remember feeling after being here for three years – when I did the third season of “The Killing” – I had a revelation. I was like “Oh, I’m playing with the words now, I’m playing with the text.” My first characters had a very home-cooked dialect. Which turned out to be pretty good. In “The Killing,” people felt it was specific and original. But it was definitely a home cookin’. The English language is so much more fun than Swedish. There are so many people that speak it, so there’s so much variation.


Later this year “Suicide Squad” is coming out. What’s your Rick Flag like?

He is a very competent, damaged, dangerous man that is in a process of finding or knowing his moral compass still exists. I don’t think he really knows if he’s a good person. If you can think of yourself as a good person, if you’ve done all the things you’ve done. He’s at the pinnacle of military force. He’s been a part of every special operations unit there is. He’s a man that has seen most of his friends die and he’s killed many people. That’s something he carries with him. He tries to live a life that is just. Sometimes that’s very difficult. Sometimes it’s difficult to defend things you do, even if you take orders. It was a really interesting character to play, especially because I got to spend a lot of time with military guys that are very similar to what Rick Flag would be. Guys that are very impressive in all aspects of life, but really carry the burden of what they have done. You can see in their eyes that they have definitely paid a price. It was a fascinating mindset to get into. It was a real learning experience.

The superhero genre is a good gig these days.

Yeah, the studios are doing event movies. I like watching some of those movies, at least. Some of them…sometimes it’s too popcorn-y and boring, almost like, cartoon-y. We had a ball shooting this movie. I really hope some of that comes off in the film. This was a film where we’re all friends. We’re all still hanging out. We became a big family, in a way. The core eight of us, we stay in touch, we talk every week. That’s really rare. Everyone dared to be vulnerable in front of one another. [Director] David Ayer had a real big impact on all of us and how he created this team. I haven’t seen it yet, but I hope some of that rubs off on the film – if it does, it’s going to be a real fun ride.

But the question is which celebrity people, both men and women, prefer?

After having received a new survey conducted by Yougov on behalf of food company Nestle.

Rosling most popular with women

The investigation reveals, among other things, that professor Hans Rosling is the man that most women want to have a dinner date with. 12% voted for him. He shaded by artist and Eurovision winner Måns Zelmerlöw on 10 percent. Other popular men and women would like to have dinner with are artist Björn Skifs, Hollywood star Joel Kinnaman and star Mikael Persbrandt.

Football Pro Zlatan Ibrahimovic ends up first on a shared fourth place.

Tina is most popular with men

The survey also shows that the woman most men want to eat dinner, is one who could Cook food to matdejten with flying colors. First ports namely television chef Tina Nordström by as much as 18 percent of the vote. 3 percent behind her we find Crown Princess Victoria. Other women that men prefer that dinner Companion is singer Lena Philipsson, actress Noomi Rapace, acclaimed artist Zara Larsson and Song bird Carola Häggkvist.

But when it comes to the celebrity that the entire Swedish people, that is, both men and women, would prefer to have dinner with – so is the order another.

5 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT JOEL KINNAMAN

Before hitting U.S. television screens as Detective Holder in the gripping show The Killing, Joel Kinnaman already was a huge success in his home country of Sweden. The combination of his Swedish and American family and experiences between the countries turned the actor into the riveting success he is today.

HE WAS A STAR EVEN BEFORE HE HIT AMERICAN SOIL

In 14 months spanning 2009 and 2010, Kinnaman starred in nine films in his native Sweden. He claims that he left “just in time” before his fame became overwhelming. One of these, the first in a series of DVDs entitled Johan Falk, earned him a nomination for Best Actor in the Guldbagge Awards. Another, Easy Money (or, in Swedish, Snabba Cash) earned him a Guldbagge Award for Best Actor and became an international success as well.

HIS MOM IS A THERAPIST

It should come as no surprise to anyone who has seen Kinnaman’s ability to morph into the characters he plays that he grew up with a therapist as his mother. Growing up around that kind of intuition enabled Kinnaman to develop a knack for delving deep into the emotional motivations for the characters he depicts.

HE CONSIDERS HIMSELF AN OUTSIDER

Kinnaman grew up with an English-speaking American father and a Swedish-speaking Swedish mother. Though he could speak both fluently, he never felt fully a part of either culture. Add to that his experiences of schoolyard bullying and a healthy dose of teenage rebellion, and the characters he plays in film and television make perfect sense.

HIS FIRST REAL EXPERIENCE OF AMERICA WAS IN TEXAS

Although he often visited the States with his father as a child, Kinnaman applied to be in a foreign exchange student program for his senior year in high school. Unfortunately, he couldn’t pick where he was going to land in the States and could only specify the West Coast. He ended up living in Del Valle, Texas, for a year and considers it one of the most important experiences of his life.

HE WAS ALMOST THOR… AND MAD MAX… BUT HE DID SNAG ROBOCOP

By just an iPhone video alone, Kinnaman was one of the final choices for the role of Thor in the DC Comics film adaptation because of the Nordic touch they were looking for. Unfortunately, his production schedule with Easy Money prevented the actor from traveling to the United States for screen tests with Natalie Portman. And he was a finalist for the lead role in Mad Max that went to Tom Hardy. Even though those two action roles passed, he still landed the part in RoboCop in 2014. And he actually replaced Hardy for the part of Rick Flagg in the upcoming Suicide Squad.

Wife Announcement--Joel corrects The Talk when they refer to Cleo as his girlfriend, and says she's his wife. He refers to Cleo as his wife in several places, and tells a cute tattoo story about her. To my knowledge this is the first time he's publicly acknowledged this. There were a bunch of rumors last summer that they'd married. Not sure if it was then or sometime later. It might not even be that newsworthy, everyone thinks of them as a unit already, and it's their business, not ours, anyway.
